Washington - US Muslim groups criticised US President George W Bush on Thursday for calling a foiled plot to blow up airplanes part of a "war with Islamic fascists," saying the term could inflame anti-Muslim tensions.
US officials have said the plot, thwarted by Britain, to blow up several aircraft over the Atlantic bore many of the hallmarks of al-Qaeda.
"We believe this is an ill-advised term and we believe that it is counterproductive to associate Islam or Muslims with fascism," said Nihad Awad, executive director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations advocacy group.
Restraint
"We ought to take advantage of these incidents to make sure that we do not start a religious war against Islam and Muslims," he told a news conference in Washington.
"We urge him (Bush) and we urge other public officials to restrain themselves."
Awad said US officials should take the lead from their British counterparts who steered clear of using what he considered inflammatory terms when they announced the arrest of more than 20 suspects in the reported plot.
Hours after the news broke, Bush said it was "a stark reminder that this nation is at war with Islamic fascists who will use any means to destroy those of us who love freedom, to hurt our nation."
'Islamo-fascism'
Bush and other administration officials have used variations of the term "Islamo-fascism" on several occasions in the past to describe militant groups including al-Qaeda, its allies in Iraq and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Homeland security secretary Michael Chertoff told MSNBC television the phrase reflected what he called Osama bin Laden's own vision of leading a totalitarian empire under the guise of religion.
"It might may not be classic fascism as you had with Mussolini or Hitler. But it is a totalitarian, intolerant imperialism that has a vision that is totally at odds with Western society and our rules of law," Chertoff said.

CAIR Goes Nuts Over Bush Remark
Right on cue, the Council on American Islamic Relations pegs the Seethe-O-Meter over President Bushs use of the words Islamic fascism: US Muslims bristle at Bush term Islamic fascists.
And heres something else that will probably induce seething, as Robert Spencer appears on CNN Headline News tonight.
UPDATE at 8/10/06 1:55:17 pm:
Allahpundit has video of Bushs speech on the British Islamic terror plot: Bush on Americas war with Islamic fascism (Update: CAIR shrieks). link: 267 comments --more-- link: 333 comments "OK. Let me get this straight.Moslems can equate Jews with Nazis, and Bush with Hitler, in unjust and insane comparisons, but Bush can't call Islamic fascism for what it, in actual fact, is?"
Rod Dreher has some good stuff over at his Crunchy Con blog today, especially regarding CAIR and the islamic fifth colunists.
http://www.anti-cair-net.org/ Since its founding in 1994, the Council on American-Islamic Relations and its employees have combined, conspired,
and agreed with third parties, including, but not limited to, the Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP), the
Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), the Global Relief Foundation (GRF), and foreign
nationals hostile to the interests of the United States

Radical Islamist front group CAIR continues to libel me (by name) and Little Green Footballs in general, with a release on their web site about their statement to the Washington Post that repeats Ibrahim Hoopers falsehoods, and has a classic CAIR smear for its title: CAIR: Islamophobic Blog Takes Aim at News Media. link: 168 comments

CAIR is calling out President Bush for finally calling the enemy what it is -- Islamic fascism. If CAIR loved freedom, justice and the American way, they would be denouncing Hezb'Allah, Ahmadinejad and aiding law enforcement in cracking sleeper cells in our great country.
U.S. MUSLIMS CONCERNED ABOUT BUSH'S USE OF 'ISLAMIC FASCISTS' - TOP
CAIR: 'Today you equated the religion of peace with the ugliness of fascism'
Yeah, you read that right. Religion of peace? Only under a pax islamica. No oeace until we all submit to Islam. That's right folks. That's what RoP means..........RoPMA
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 8/10/06) - A prominent national Islamic civil rights and advocacy group today expressed concern over President Bush's use of the term "Islamic fascists" in a news conference about the arrest of 21 suspects in a plot to bomb airliners flying between Britain and the United States.
SEE: Religious Group Bristles at Bush Term 'Islamic Fascists' (Reuters)
In a letter to President Bush, Parvez Ahmed, board chairman of the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) wrote in part:
"Unfortunately, your statement this morning that America 'is at war with Islamic fascists' contributes to a rising level of hostility to Islam and the American-Muslim community. Just today, Gallup released a poll indicating that four out of ten Americans feel 'prejudice' toward Muslims.
Either you are with us or against us. Otherwise, you are part of the fifth column.
Personally, I generally just call them terrorists. They clearly have some qualities in common with the fascists of the 30s and 40s, but, frankly, calling the terrorists "fascists" does a disservice to the fascists. In my opinion, today's Islamic terrorists are worse even than the Communists, who previously held the record. Worse qualitatively, that is; the difference is that the terrorists don't yet wield the kind of power that the Communists once did.
If anyone ever figures out what CAIR wants us to call the people who try to blow up airplanes, let me know. In the meantime, I'll keep on calling them "the *&#)@/ terrorists."
