UNDATED -- Hajj also worked as a freelancer for The Associated Press from 2003-2005. the AP was reviewing all 193 of his images in its photo archives to verify their authenticity. On Monday, the AP recalled a photo that it had transmitted Sunday night of a worker in Alaska examining an oil pipeline. In that photo, the worker appeared to have four hands, and there were other elements such as a section of pipe that appeared to have a double image. Lyon said the distortions were unintentional and resulted from careless use by the photographer of a software feature in Photoshop called a "cloning tool." The photographer had used the feature in an attempt to clear up a glitch in the picture caused by a dirty sensor, the part of a digital camera that records the image. AP's ethical guidelines permit use of "cloning" in limited circumstances to clean up dirt or scratches from an image. Lyon said the error was not caught by either the photographer or the editing desk before it was transmitted on the AP's photo service. He said the company was reviewing disciplinary actions against the photographer and other parties involved. Last month, The Charlotte Observer said it had terminated one of its photographers, Patrick Schneider, after finding that he had altered the colors in a photo of a firefighter on a ladder. Kenny Irby, visual journalism group leader at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, Fla., said all three instances show that news organizations need to be more careful in how they handle images. "There has to be an editing component that ensures the accuracy of the content," Irby said. "It's not just the photographer that should be examined, but the overall process of the news organization that must be held accountable."

AP & Reuters: "Too bad you were caught, Hajj. Hit the road, and be more careful at your next gig."
He's "their kind of guy".
Excellent! You coined a great new term... :o)
"Fauxtography!"
Nice....we need to add that to any Reuters sourced Faux-to's...
Such an easy nuance to overlook in the initial editing...
ya gotta wonder how long ap and rotorooters knew that those and other pics were phoneys...seasoned editors fooled by a punk with a photoshop program .... geben Sie mir einen Bruch!
a $9/hour prom photog, air brushing zits out of teen ager's faces....
How about this: U.S. CITIZENS FIRE REUTERS
Okay. I can understand cropping and balancing for color and contrast. But maybe some apologist for the AP can tell me why they need to use a cloning tool for a news photograph. Also the AP might indicate who Photoshops the picture: is it the photograhper, or the AP, or both?
ML/NJ
Sounds like they may have an opening soon at the NYT.
LOL
Wonder if Green helmet dude has a few extra. Guy is everywhere!
Everybody at AP knows that pipeline leaks cause birth defects, so this was making a statement.
Ok, "fauxtography" is just all kinds of awesome. Hitler's propoganda machine was less subtle than the MSM.
"Four hands? Shut up! That's just the angle!"
"But how could Condi NOT have demon eyes? She's evil, isn't she?"
"There are TONS of triplets in the Middle East. You don't know anything!" *stomps off*
The whole thing would be really hilarious if they were actually held accountable in some way, but of course they won't be.
These guys have a great future. I want to hire one of them to take a picture of the house I'm selling, all future family reunions, anything I want to sell on e-bay, etc.
FAUXTOGRAPHY!!!! Why didn't I think of that!!! Good one!!!!
