FBI Interested in Large Prepaid Cell Phone Purchases Posted 8/3/2006 06:06 PM

Store clerks in Grafton say people have been coming into their stores and buying several phones at a time. Story by Sarah Kapis Email | Bio

Folks at the Dollar General in Grafton say in the past few days, several men have come into the store attempting to buy large numbers of prepaid phones. However, store policy only allows a customer to buy two phones at a time, in fact, they are locked away from the general public.

The clerks say after they were in the Dollar General, the men went to the Grafton Walmart to try to purchase more of the phones.

Grafton police found one man during a traffic stop. They say he had hundreds of prepaid phones in his car.

There is no word on what the men planned to do with the phones or why they bought so many, but the incident was later turned over to the FBI for an investigation.

The owner of Country Roads Communications says the allure of the prepaid phones is the freedom that come with them. However, the FBI is not ready to say that the phones are being used for illegal or criminal purposes.

"Prepaids are hard to track, so they're used alot for illegal operations," said Vince Cafazza.

"We are aware that there are a number of purchases throughout the state. Large purchases of trac phones. We are interested in the purchases because they are unusual," said Dan Caldwell, FBI special agent. "We also understand that a number of the larger stores in the area are aware of the purchases. We are not aware of any criminal activity associated with the purchases at this point."

Caldwell says if you notice someone trying to buy large quantities of these type of phones, you can contact your local police or the FBI.

There are NO LEGITIMATE uses for buying "several hundred tons" ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil as you have clearly claimed.

So open-pit mines are not legitimate users of ANFO?

Are you covering for suggesting that Toby06 is buying ANFO for open pit mining ?

"Buying 100 prepaids in one transaction isn't something those at war with us would do."

Didn't one of these idiots who bombed the WTC get caught because he went back to the truck rental company wanting his deposit back.

They don't think like us.

"So open-pit mines are not legitimate users of ANFO?"

When in the employ of H.B Zachry, over a period of time, I loaded quit a few tons of ANFO into bore holes (a relatively small amount at a time), in which we had already placed 2"X 8" sticks of dynamite, which had had placed in them, electric delay blasting caps.

Hillside destruction, making small rocks out of big rocks the easy way...the goal being to have the the resulting earth be workable by large articulated front-end loaders.

When Interstate freeways go through hills, ya gotta move all that dirt and underlying rock out of the way.

The ANFO was the major explosive charge. The dynamite by itself wouldn't do much, though we did try out some small bottles of bottles of nitro glycerine once, and that stuff would do what a LOT of ANFO would do. It was impressive...but when the powder master asked me if he thought we should switch over, (so as to save the company money, I guess) my answer was "no", since we would have to be carrying those little bottles around in pickup trucks, bouncing over rough ground, etc., Seeing how just a "little" nitro did as much as twenty 4 inch boreholes filled with ANFO did, I was a little afraid of the stuff.

That being said, I ask Toby06/Pee-Wee, or whoever he is, take his 100 hamhocks, and "go in peace", PLEASE!

Hmmmmm...thanks TomGuy

A quick search brought this up from Jan 06:

Snip:

Police Report Identifies Terror Links

In the Midland, Texas, arrest report, police also identified the individuals as linked to a terror cell:

"Evasive responses provided by the subjects, coupled with actions observed by officers at the onset of the contact prompted the notification of local FBI officials to assist in the investigation," the report said. "Upon the arrival of special agents, and as a result of subsequent interviews, it was discovered that members of the group were linked to suspected terrorist cells stationed within the Metroplex."

Law enforcement officials have not elaborated on the information in the report or specified which terrorist group the individuals were allegedly linked to.

In addition, special agents reported that similar incidents centering on the large-scale purchases of tracfones had been reported throughout the nation — identifying individuals of Middle-Eastern descent as the purchasers."

Lovely, you are on the "outlaw cellphones" bandwagon.

Please send me a copy of my text that calls for outlawing cellphones. Is it your practice to project a new meaning to unrelated posts?

So a citizen buying something in bulk is suspicious?

Yup, it sure is.
Guns are legal but 100 rifles in the back of a car should be cause for suspicion and at least a question.

Cellphones are legal but hundreds in the back of a car should be cause for suspicion and at least a question.

A 100 pounds of the nitrate used in fertilizer isn't illegal either for a farmer to have, maybe more for a big outfit but 2000 lbs of this legal substance in a U-haul truck should be cause for at least a question.

I don't think you can quote me as wanting to ban cellphones because none of my posts reflect that. A little common sense is in order when an unusual and potentially dangerous or suspicious situation is at hand. hundreds of cellphones in the back of a car is suspicious at least and at least should prompt a question or two. Questions are not necessarily accusatory or inconvenient to any person who has nothing to hide and willing to be a responsible citizen.

I have a hard time understanding those who would risk the lives of others in order not to experience the slightest inconvenience of being asked a few questions or searched at large public events, at airports etc.

Do you throw a tantrum at red lights because your freedom of movement rights are being violated?

It may be that the Muslim leaders have orderd the "phone buying" just to rattle cages here, tough I would not bet against a real plot of Muslims preparing to hit infidels.

If we do get hit, I am sure they have a massive plan.

But one thing I dont understand, is why we still issue Visas to Middle East Muslim Students. Are we just plain stupid?

Relax, dude. The purchase of ANFO in the case of construction would be a company (professional) and not a personal purchase. I would suspect that significant paperwork would be involved in the purchase of such large quantities of ANFO. I questioned in the thread because you were not forthcoming with the reasons for purchasing large quantities of ANFO. One person suggested open pit mining. The purchase of 100 cellphones by a single individual who is a stranger in a small town, as is the topic of this thread would likely not be a company (professional) purchase. In one case its a company professional purchase and in the other is a personal retail usage. The two instances would be incomparable to one another.

Is capitalism a "suspicious activity" now?

It has been for the last 60 years or so.

See, there ARE legitimate uses of anfo. Besides, it's good around the farm for popping stumps and rocks, too, as long as you can obtain the caps without an eye.

Like others have said, it (large cellphone purchases) could have been a boss buying them for his company, or for gifts.

I forgot to add you to my ping on this: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1680335/posts
