When in the employ of H.B Zachry, over a period of time, I loaded quit a few tons of ANFO into bore holes (a relatively small amount at a time), in which we had already placed 2"X 8" sticks of dynamite, which had had placed in them, electric delay blasting caps.
Hillside destruction, making small rocks out of big rocks the easy way...the goal being to have the the resulting earth be workable by large articulated front-end loaders.
When Interstate freeways go through hills, ya gotta move all that dirt and underlying rock out of the way.
The ANFO was the major explosive charge. The dynamite by itself wouldn't do much, though we did try out some small bottles of bottles of nitro glycerine once, and that stuff would do what a LOT of ANFO would do. It was impressive...but when the powder master asked me if he thought we should switch over, (so as to save the company money, I guess) my answer was "no", since we would have to be carrying those little bottles around in pickup trucks, bouncing over rough ground, etc., Seeing how just a "little" nitro did as much as twenty 4 inch boreholes filled with ANFO did, I was a little afraid of the stuff.
That being said, I ask Toby06/Pee-Wee, or whoever he is, take his 100 hamhocks, and "go in peace", PLEASE!
please excuse the bad grammer...
Say no to nitro! Yikes!
