Even taking this guy seriously, Deuteronomy 17 requires that one charged with such a crime have a public trial and at least two witnesses to the crime. "Secretly entices" implies told to you in private with no other witnesses. Therefore the section of Chapter 13 quoted is unenforceable, even by Biblical standards.

(BTW, this begins at 13:7 in my copy of the Bible, but I'm using a Jewish Bible and there are a few verse-numbering differences between Jewish and Christian versions.) 17 also specifies that the crime be committed "within Israel." Therefore, you're family is safe in the U.S. Further, I do not believe that "In Israel" refers to the nation today, but to the kingdom that was centered on the First and Second Temples. So your family is safe with regard to time, as well. And I seriously doubt it was too often carried out, even at the time of the Temples. It is said that for years Deuteronomy was lost, before it was rediscovered during the reign of King Josiah...so it is unlikely to have been carried out for the period immediately before that.

Mind you, there is also a question of whether today's Deuteronomy really is the Fifth book of Moses, Joshua, and God or whether it is a full or partial fraud of Josiah, Hilkiah, and Huldah.

What penalty of death is included in this? Certainly none for the general population. Just the leaders. And the death penalty has not a thing to do with eventual conversion to Christianity or not, as the case may be.

It is Muslims who apply the death penalty to those who will not convert to Islam, or to those who attempt to convert to another religion after once being a Muslim. Been several centuries since Christians have applied this rule. (Those who still apply such a rule today cannot, strictly speaking, be classified as "Christians".)

The answer you seek is there if you care to read. In Chapter 12, God explains who he is talking to:

1 These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the LORD, the God of your fathers, has given you to possess—as long as you live in the land.

It really isn't all that complicated. In Old Testament passages, where civil law is mentioned (a law PLUS a penalty) one must consider the original audience...completely. Since we don't live under a Theocracy established by God through Moses (and no one does today, including modern Israel) then the PENALTIES do not apply. However, it's not as simple as "oh, Jesus freed us from the law" (as someone said above) as the principle behind them still does apply. (besides Jesus freed us from the penalties of the moral law, not the law itself, or else adultery and murder should be just fine for a Christian...)

God is not a religious pluralist. He does care who (or what) people worship. The principle to take away from this verse is how serious a thing it is to worship a false god...serious enough that friends and family should walk away from someone who turns away from Christ. Jesus agreed with the PRINCIPLE behind this when He said:

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:16)

The Apostle Paul too, in I Corinthians advocated separating out of the fellowship a man active in incest...this is called excommunication. The Old Testament clearly condemns such behavior and, in the Western world at least, so do we still. Of course the Old Testament PENALTY (for theocratic Israel) was death for such behaviour.

The Church (and Jews too) still condemns such as sin, but of course the penalty is not (nor has it been...since theocratic Israel) death, but separation from fellowship--excommunication. The state too of course makes such behavior a crime, varying in its penalty.

So, since there is not theocracy now (and Jesus said His kingdom was not of this world...hence no command to establish one) Old Testament penalties don't apply, whereas the principles behind them often do...

but God does not change and neither does his word. That is correct. However because of the hardness of our hearts He modifies according to circumstances. Such as divorce and stoning. It is because we would pervert the intention (which was to keep pure the religion of the Jews). Technically the law will will never change. But if we are under grace we are no longer under the condemnation of the law.

Point of information, perhaps you can help, AR. I have a vague memory that 3 or 4 books contained in the King James version of the Bible are not in the Catholic version, and I think Deuteronomy was one of those books.

Is my memory faulty? Thanks in advance to any that can shed light.
