JERUSALEM - It may have one of the world's mightiest militaries, but Israel has turned to imported beasts of burden to help troops wage a 20-day-old offensive against Hizbollah guerrillas in Lebanon.
Israeli newspapers carried pictures of South American llamas accompanying commandos out of southern Lebanon, their saddlebags full of fighting gear.

I think they have to wear burkas in Islamic cultures.

Way Cool! I have heard that pack goats are also real popular in the military. Llamas and goats are so much easier to care for than horses, remain healthier, easier to get around in some of those areas, not to mention fuel efficient! I wonder if they barter the fleece with the locals for intel?

Cute pics.
They are small, agile, docile animals, but llamas are not very strong. It would be better to use donkeys or mules. A donkey can carry nearly his own weight.
Ilamas are used in Australia by sheep farmers, to protect their flocks. They are pastured with the sheep, and will attack feral dogs who menace the lambs. They must have a fighting streak. But I still think donkeys are the go for small, mobile transport over rough ground.

So where are the bears? PICS
To: BlackVeil
I think I read somewhere that the IDF has tried to use donkeys, but they are too unreliable and cantankerous.

The principle reason for picking llamas over donkeys may be noise. Donkeys, political and otherwise, can be noisy little critters.

Good point. Llamas probably are much quieter.

I wonder if they barter the fleece with the locals for intel? They could barter it to me, although I don't have any useful intel. Llama wool and alpaca (different but similar animal) are both wonderful fibers to knit with. Oh, right; wartime use: good pack animals, very agile on uneven and rough terrain, don't have to eat often, and probably much easier to deal with than camels or donkeys.

No, they probably aren't; but as long as they aren't used as moving MREs, then it's probably OK.

Llamas and goats are so much easier to care for than horses, remain healthier, easier to get around in some of those areas, And when the cargo that the goat was carrying has been consumed, the goat can be too
