Peace force in Lebanon decries limits (UN peace keepers armen with phones)

NAQOURA, Lebanon -- A volley of outgoing Katyusha rockets zipped from the hilltop above the gate of the United Nations peacekeepers' compound here yesterday late in the afternoon.

``That's Hezbollah, firing from a position 300 meters away," Colonel Jacques Colleville said, pointing up the hill. ``Now the Israelis will retaliate."

Ear-shattering explosions soon followed as the Israelis replied by shelling the Hezbollah position. Smoke, dust, and fire rose from the hilltop.

Israel and the United States have been adamant that a robust international military force should take on the role of peacekeeper in south Lebanon when the bloody two-week-old war between Israel and the Islamist militia in southern Lebanon ends. None of the proposals yet addresses the number or origin of troops or the authority the peacekeepers would have. But any future force will have to contend with many of the same problems that crippled the existing United Nations mission, including Hezbollah's power as a popular guerrilla movement, the weakness of Lebanon's central government, and the limited mandate that has prevented peacekeepers from using force.

Colleville, who is French, said the UN troops have been largely powerless to stop Hezbollah from launching rockets right beside UN positions or to intervene when the Israeli military bombs civilians when attacking what it says are Hezbollah targets.

Asked whether UNIFIL could have helped disarm Hezbollah, Colleville laughed.

``How would I disarm them?" he said. ``With my telephone?"

United Nations forces in southern Lebanon, known by the acronym UNIFIL, have been responsible for keeping the peace in southern Lebanon since 1978. Largely ignored, they have been witnesses to frequent periods of violent conflict, climaxing with the war that has reduced much of the south to rubble in the last two weeks.

That says it all. They are simply a way to use US money forenlarging a bloated UN payroll. They can't and don't stop anything. Not just Lebanon but Darfur, and previous massacres prove that.

One of my hardest day jobs is to read and comment on future military doctrine. Recently I have read several joint publications (doctrine documents for all the armed forces) dealing with peace operations.

What a joke.

The erroneous assumptions are massive and repetitive. The proposed employment guides were written by some one with absolutely zero experience in actual combat. The stupidly from supposedly knowledgeable military officers makes me wonder, again, about our promotion system.

Bottom lines:

1. Peace must be desired by both sides.

2. Both sides must fear violation of the peace accords.

3. There must be a demonstrated penalty for any violations of the peace accords. That penalty must be swift, expensive, and violent.

In short, active maintenance of the peace accords must be more attractive than their violation.

Based on my three bottom lines above any peace keeping forced fielded by the UN, or even NATO, are doomed to a bloody failure particularly in the Middle East.

The UN knows what it is doing. They are providing a shield for the Islamics. They are doing it willingly and knowingly.b they arent the cure for the problem. They are a part of it.

"Colleville, who is French, said the UN troops have been largely powerless
to stop Hezbollah from launching rockets right beside UN positions
or to
[retaliate against UN/Hizb'allah terrorist sites]."

Fixed it for the terrorist Boston Globe.

In Lebanon, United Nations personel were killed after grifter and Emperor-Terrorist Kofi Annan personally
refused to let them leave because he fears that the UN-Hizb'allah connection may become clearer.

Israel asked for all non-Hizb'allah personnel to evacuate from South Lebanon.
Even as the missiles were fired from their UN-Hizb'allah buildings,
the UN shields repeatedly called the UN then Israel, and back and forth, but they were Kofi's
'shields', guinea pigs for the UN-Terrorist Organization, who would have been shot for desertion
if they had left without the explicit written order, which had to be signed
by War Criminal Terrorist-Emperor and grifter Annan himself. War Criminal Annan
refused to release them. And since then, Krazi Kofi has forced these people from several countries
to reman for at least one more month as terrorist shields for the UN in the tiny 1% or less taken
out in retaliation. The UN has a long and proven history working with Hizb'allah terrorists
in locations where both the UN and Hizb'allah terrorist flags fly together.

AMAZING PRECISION

Less than 1% of Beirut has been hit. Yet the MSM
will not present that because these have been ultra-precision
attacks against terrorists (and the civilian shields and UN toadies).

The black in the maps is what the Israelis have taken out.
The MSM focuses on the same buildings over and over.

... and the limited mandate that has prevented peacekeepers from using force.

In the first Gulf War the UN insisted we only remove Saddam from Kuwait, not destroy him. In Rwanda they just stood by and watched the genocide because they were under strict rules of non-engagement. In other areas, like the Balkans and in Africa, they get into trouble because headquarters, the UN in New York, has their hands tied.

The same people who insist on ceasefires the minute the enemy starts suffering are also the ones who insist we fight wars without hurting anyone, if we fight at all.

Enough!! Ignore those people just as Israel is now doing. I am surprised and happy we are allowing it. It is long over due. Thank God for the cowboy in the WH.
