Should There Be a Probation Period for Posting Threads?

Enemies of Free Republic sign up to post obscene and vile threads. I've seen a number of them lately, usually on the theme of child-rape. It seems there is a concerted effort to drive Freepers away from the site in disgust. The Mods are quick, still I wonder if it's wise to allow people to sign up and immediately post? I'm a Dollar-a-Day donor to FR and I want this wonderful place to flourish as family-friendly site. I wonder what other Freepers think?

I think the adult majority here does just fine in sniffing out trolls and turning them into cat toys.

I think the kitty brigade is a vehicle for sleeper trolls to further sneak into the group. Just because you can ridicule a jerk troll doesn't mean your not one yourself. All you can do is judge the content of the post. If the poster constantly posts divisive stuff, chances are your reading a fifth columnist, a pretender, a phony. The more they protest the greater your chances of being correct in identifying them.

Well, the troll the morning was a particularly disturbed and perverted character, and my girls occasionally FReep with me and read along.

What this deviant posted in the "Breaking News" section is a problem.

I hope it was just for "shock value", because anybody who could think up that kind of perversion has some serious issues.

To answer the question...absolutely there should be a posting restriction for some period. At least it will keep these miscreants from signing up and posting obscenities whenever they feel like it.

No nannyism on Free Republic. This site has always been known for its hurly-burly. It's not for the faint or the weak of heart. It's got its guardians, and they do their job well. But few trolls survive their initial encounter with the hoi-polloi, and the mods usually come in with the body bag afterward.
