Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich says America is in World War III and President Bush should say so. In an interview in Bellevue this morning Gingrich said Bush should call a joint session of Congress the first week of September and talk about global military conflicts in much starker terms than have been heard from the president.
"We need to have the militancy that says 'We're not going to lose a city,' " Gingrich said. He talks about the need to recognize World War III as important for military strategy and political strategy.
Gingrich said he is "very worried" about Republican's facing fall elections and says the party must have the "nerve" to nationalize the elections and make the 2006 campaigns about a liberal Democratic agenda rather than about President Bush's record.
Gingrich says that as of now Republicans "are sailing into the wind" in congressional campaigns. He said that's in part because of the Iraq war, adding, "Iraq is hard and painful and we do not explain it very well."
But some of it is due to Republicans' congressional agenda. He said House and Senate Republicans "forgot the core principle" of the party and embraced Congressional pork. "Some of the guys," he said, have come down with a case of "incumbentitis."
Gingrich said in the coming days he plans to speak out publicly, and to the Administration, about the need to recognize that America is in World War III.
He lists wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, this week's bomb attacks in India, North Korean nuclear threats, terrorist arrests and investigations in Florida, Canada and Britain, and violence in Israel and Lebanon as evidence of World War III. He said Bush needs to deliver a speech to Congress and "connect all the dots" for Americans.

What? Newt's running third behind Allen and Tancredo in the FR poll.
So do I.
And it began in November 1979 in Tehran; our anemic "response" was essentially an act of surrender to Islamofascism. They were emboldened for every atrocity ever since. I personally hold Jimmy Carter responsible for dereliction of duty and every US death at the hands of terrorists in this past quarter century.
I can't help laughing even though I know Bellevue is a Seattle suburb.
Newt is to Domestic politics what Kissinger was to Foreign Policy.
Great 2nd batters.
Gingrich may get on the nerves of many, but especially the liberals. But the man is a very wise, intelligent man, and he usually knows what he is talking about. And he is most articulate when he speaks. I wish we would hear more from him.
We're NOT in WORLD War 3, at least not yet. We're in partial Middle East War 3....and holding.
Leni
Our people are unprepared.
Even here, there are many who are against domestic ethanol as a motor fuel, because it costs a little more and is a little less efficient.
Can you imagine that? Dependent on our bitter enemies until the very end.
I'm sure oil is going to $100,or higher - and there will be precious little of it, at any price.
I hope Newt catches on with Americans down the stretch. His IQ is probably 50 points ahead of his competition. The media has tried to destroy him, but he is one capable son of a gun.

and Newt and more than a few Republicans and FReepers. This "article" represents one of the many reasons I will just say NO to Newt.
Beat me to it. I knew somebody had to post the corrected numbering. I'm afraid only if the editors of Commentary get to write the next generations' history texts will we get our way on WW III = Cold War.
(Not though there isn't a case for fixing the numbering to start with I for the Seven Years War (French-and-Indian War round these parts), II for the Napoleonic Wars (War of 1812 over here), III for what now gets I, IV for the one with Hitler, V for the Cold War, and VI for this one.)
Personally, I regard the current one as the 1400-Years War.
IT is and we need to start drilling for oil now!
Funny--if we are in WWIII, how come we keep reducing the number of active duty troops? In WWII, we had half the population and 8M in the armed forces. The truth is we can't win WWIII and have mushrooming entitlement spending at the same time. We've got to make a choice.
Nope Monday after Labor Day (first day back from recess) at Ground Zero.
Gingrich is a great "ideas" man and a great strategist but in a national election I don't know if he's a good candidate.
As say a VP or a SecState or even a Chief of Staff or NSA, fine, but I don't know about the top of the ticket.
Bingo! Thats why chavez should wake up tomorrow in the hereafter. Monroe him.
Ouch...that hurts an old girl like the NY TIMES.
I say "bring it on!" Maybe then the lame CONgresscritters will kick the crap out of the environazis and start drilling! We have plenty of oil on our own soil. We just need to go after it.
I am not a Newt fan either. Never liked him.

US President George W. Bush has said the September 11 revolt of passengers against their hijackers on board Flight 93 had struck the first blow of "World War III".
In an interview with the financial news network CNBC, Mr Bush said he had yet to see the recently released film of the uprising, a dramatic portrayal of events on the United Airlines plane before it crashed in a Pennsylvania field.
But he said he agreed with the description of David Beamer, whose son Todd died in the crash, who in a Wall Street Journal commentary last month called it "our first successful counter-attack in our homeland in this new global war, World War III".
Mr Bush said: "I believe that. I believe that it was the first counter-attack to World War III.
