Rice Calls for Israeli Restraint
Voice of America ^ | 14JUL06 | Scott Stearns

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is calling on Israel to exercise restraint in its ongoing military offensive to free kidnapped Israeli soldiers. She says Syria and Iran must stop backing terrorists.

Secretary Rice would not comment specifically on the Israeli bombing of Beirut's airport, repeating the Bush Administration stance that Israel has the right to defend itself against missile strikes launched from Lebanese territory.

But as Israel exercises that right of self defense, Rice says it is important that Israeli leaders exercise restraint and avoid civilian casualties.

Rice says the Bush Administration understands that Israel is launching attacks so far inside Lebanon to prevent those who kidnapped two Israeli soldiers from moving them beyond Israel's reach.

Speaking to reporters traveling with President Bush in Germany, Rice said some countries, including Egypt, have been playing a very positive role in working to resolve the crisis by bringing parties together.

She says there is no doubt that others, namely Syria and Iran, are encouraging those responsible for the kidnappings and missile attacks on Israeli territory. "We have to remember that both the external leadership of Hamas and a number of the Hezbollah activities are carried out from the territory of Syria, and Syria needs to act responsibly and stop the use of its territory for these kinds of activities and it needs to bring all pressure on those that it is harboring to stop this and to return these soldiers and to allow this situation to deescalate," he said.

Following talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Bush expressed concerns about how Israeli attacks inside Lebanon will affect the stability of the democratically-elected government in Beirut.

National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley says Israeli authorities understand the risks facing Prime Minister Faud Siniora. "We have had a number of comments and conversations about the need to try and shore-up and not destabilize the Siniora government in Lebanon. This is a good government that is trying to bring greater democracy and freedom to Lebanon. It has a lot of challenges. This is one more challenge that they do not need," he said.

Rice says the best opportunity now to deescalate the crisis is through a three-member United Nations delegation heading to the region.

What is self defense to you? If someone murders my father do I have the right to claim self defense when I blow up the entire city that the murderer is from?

We all know that Rice is the poster child for the new republican (rino) party, but just once can someone tell her to STFU.

Well your right - I didn't denie that.

But that wasn't the point.

My question was, will it be 'hot' with oil at 200 $ ?

No, I would disagree with that assessment, and I know Prime Minister Olmert does too in terms of giving up land. What is more important than land is the survival of the Jewish people, and demarcated, defendable borders without large, hostile populations inside is the smart move. Sometimes Israel's divided politics make it harder for Israelis to see the sensible move.

If you notice, the new borders will include most Jewish settlements; only the outlying, harder-to-defend ones, like Gaza, were gone.

I don't think the results of negotiations would have led to a Kumbaya scene, but rather, a grudging peace. But it was worth a try. It failed, but after this is over, there's still going to be people having to live near each other.

If the Palestinians hadn't been such blithering idiots, it could have worked. It is the tragedy of history that the listened to their fellow Arabs and continued to be their tool rather than strike out and be a prosperous partner of Israel.

Perhaps you should re-phrase your question. Will ANY economy be in existence if oil hits $200/bbl? Since we are still (relatively) significantly below $100/bbl, you can take it to the bank that IF (and that's a VERY big if, IMO) oil hits $100/bbl, somebody better be ducking.

that's correct - ANY econmy other than e.g. brazil, russia or the gulf states or otheres that have reached energy authonomy will buckle extremely under that scenario.

But IF Iran enteres the war scenario - I guess 200 $ will be a good guess.

I guess we see 100 if Israel doesn't step down.

Should that come to pass, the obstructionists in Washington won't find a rock big enough to slither under. The bulk of Americans (IMO) support the Isarelis and don't want to see them back off. This battle has been brewing for a long time and the terrorists are finally getting what they have been asking for.

Killing innocent people is NO self-defense. Your death ratio is simply too high that it could be excused over "self-defense" (following this argumentation you could say that all mass murders defended themselves since some of their victims also used force against them). What Israel is doing now is indeed self-defense. Following your advise means to commit a Holocaust. That is a fundamental difference. Since Israel is no evil and barbarian murder connection they will never follw this path.

If your refer to Christ than you should follow and know the most basic and important rules of this religion. To notice this has nothing to do with preaching.

Israel drops leaflets warning innocents about their plans to bomb an area. They are doing more than enough to minimize civilian casualties (a sad reality in any war). They are 100% justified.

No doubt about that. Israel is just doing what must be done. Please read my #71. It was the answer to a moronic suggestion of "Jezebelle" to nuke all arabs unregarded if they are innocent or not.

No kidding. Why the h*ll should you negotiate with someone who won't acknowledge you have a right to exist? There ain't a friggin country that cares as long as it's Jews getting blown up, but the first time Israel defends itself and the Arabs start getting an @ss-kicking, it's time to have a peace accord and send the Arabs another few billion to buy bullets.

As for "confiscated land," the history of who the land belongs to is an interesting one. More Europeans should read it, instead of reading British revisionisms.

There aren't many citations (for references) in the following, but there are many good keywords with which to find them. The history of the British Mandate period is also there. ...sorry that I don't know of a German language version on the Web.

http://www.palestinefacts.org/

As for the hatred among the Arabs in Israel, a small percentage of the young men have family members who were killed. And far fewer know family members who were killed as innocent bystanders. Nearly all of them were taught to hate and to start fights with Jews since early childhood. They are guerrilla fighters by intent, regardless of age and training--not civilians. If Israel intended to kill such young guerrillas, the Arab youth wouldn't have their history of throwing rocks at tanks and armored personnel carriers.

I'm probably wasting keystrokes here, though, because western European newspapers are quite different from those of the USA regarding Israel and the so-called "Palestinians." Some of Ancient Roman and Turkish culture continues in Europe. Most of our early American ancestors moved away from Europe to get away from that 2000+-year war and to have religious freedom, but that war continues to arise through old, recycled Roman propaganda tactics and to start again.

I agree, BTW, that we (allies) and Israel should avoid killing civilians.

I also argue that Israel has shown remarkable restraint, and that our Secretary of State Rice has no standing to give advice on that. Israel tolerated many Kassam rocket attacks and other terrorist attacks before going back into Gaza.

Most Islamists want Israel, Judaism and Christianity destroyed--even most Islamists who say that they're "not very religious." Most of the "moderate" ones want others to do it for them, though.

Can you show that to me on a map - or better show me where it not is ?

And who are the guys we are fighting ?

What conditions have to be met to end it ?

I'll do better: go to the nearest public library and ask for "The transformation of war" by Martin van Creveld. It is a page-turner and in the same time a very serious research - published in 1991 to that, which means the author isn't one of the guys that rush to write on any vogue topic of the day...

Enjoy your reading and f***k the public opinion - they're idiots anyway.

She is the Secretary of State of the most powerful nation in the world. Your statement is completely ignorant. Stop acting as if because she hasn't called for Israel to completely destroy the surrounding countries that she is somehow a weak person. Some of the people on this site disgust me. You call yourself conservatives but some of the views I see are similar to Hitler. Death Death DEATH!!!! NUKE NUKE! Kill 'em all! It's kind of sick. Condi is a strong minded person and just because she calls for restraint does not mean she has thrown a leash on Israel.

You don't sound emotionally suited to defend the innocent. You have to be willing to kill the bad guys, even with nuclear weapons as necessary. Life is not a movie.
