Commentary: War on Iran Has Begun
The New York Sun ^ | July 13, 2006 | DAVID TWERSKY

Just last Friday, Iranian President Ahmadinejad warned that Israel's return to Gaza could lead to an "explosion" in the Islamic world that would target Israel and its supporters in the West.

"They should not let things reach a point where an explosion occurs in the Islamic world," ...

"If an explosion occurs, then it won't be limited to geographical boundaries. It will also burn all those who created [Israel] over the past 60 years," he said, implicitly referring to America and other Western nations who support Israel.

Years from now, the kidnapping of Corporal Gilad Shalit will be regarded like the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand.

Against the backdrop of Kassam rocket fire on Israelis living within range of the Gaza Strip, it was the fate of Corporal Shalit that triggered the Israeli return to Gaza, which in turn brought the Hezbollah forces into the game.

Israel is fighting two Iranian proxies on two fronts.

It may, or may not, open a third front against a third Iranian proxy, Syria.

It is from the Syrian capital that Khaled Meshaal, the exiled leader of Hamas, has been laying down Palestinian Arab negotiating conditions.

Why listen to Mr. Meshaal? ...

Even more loyal to Tehran is the Hezbollah leader, Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, whose forces yesterday kidnapped two more Israeli soldiers, opening up the second front.

Sheik Nasrallah is warning Israelis that they must not think Lebanon is unprotected as it was in 1981 and 1982 when Israeli forces came pouring across the border to silence Palestinian Arab guns.

Sheik Nasrallah's men are the recipients of tens of thousands of rockets — longer range and presumably more deadly than their roughly engineered younger Kassam cousins — that put central Israel in their range.

Great post. I've been arguing with people forever about "Why are we in Afghanistan? Why are we in Iraq?" Read a friggin map. Also, to those who think it was foolish to support the Taliban against Russia, if Russia controlled Afghanistan, how many bases would we have there?

I used to go through the same thing about why we were in Viet Nam. The problem was not being there, it was that Lyndon Johnson was trying to run the war. It was destined to be a tightly fought battle, because US success there meant our navy had the run of the entire Asian Pacific coastline, and China and Russia weren't going to allow that without a fight.

Today, it's obvious that Lebanon and Syria are puppets for Iran. Is Iran a puppet for China, though? N. Korea is obviously a Chinese puppet. Don't forget to thank Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton for creating this situation.

Last month pakis discussed this whole scenario while discussing the mutual 'defense agreement' signed by syria and iran. Interesting comments. http://www.pakistanidefenceforum.com/lofiversion/index.php/t56253.html

The next explosion in the islamic world will probably be over Iran and this nutjob should he (of course will be) stupid enough to attack Israel.

The next explosion in the Islamic world will probably be the Islamic world getting reset to about AD 700.

Fully correct, it's all about the map.

What you stated about the former Soviet Afghan air bases is so true. Instead of Afghanistan, now the Russian are arming Iran and Syria, which in turn arm Hamas and Hizballah. Talk about Vietnam in terms of the Russian enemy supporting communist North Vietnam. Nothing has changed, Moscow continues openly siding with the worst anti-Western dictatorships.

If Putin's Russian (neo-Soviet) military advisor's are taken out when the current war descends on both Damascus and Tehran, all the better. We as a nation must arrive at the realization if another country is arming various jihadist and communist régimes so those régimes can murder Americans, Israelis, British and other allies, that country is the instigating source of the overall global problem.

Baghdad was our practice for the two terrorist capitals in either side of Iraq.

Damascus will be first, then shortly after, Mullahville - Tehran.

a guy i work with, who is from iran, tells me that he would not be surprised if iran did not launch 200 missiles toward isreal with the next couple of weeks....

Can you tell us if he is taking any vacation time in the next few weeks? Let us know, particularly if he is taking ALL OF IT...

Nope Syria first. Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, then Iran. Smallest to largest, and remove Mediterranean ports first.

That certainly makes sense.

This is getting UGLY.

I remain in "should I stay or should I go" mode.

I hope Turkey stays clear - keeping that in mind as an escape route.

Yikes! That would get really interesting, really fast, seeing as how great circle paths from Iran to Israel all pass right over Iraq. I don't see us ignoring that.

Any carrier group, any USN ship, in the Persian Gulf, should be on a war footing 24/7.

Watching this from nearby
I find the situation depressing.

What is happening is exactly what Iran wanted.

More confusion and diversionary turmoil.

Iran knows exactly what it wants
and how to get it
and how to plan ahead
realistically.

Unfortunately
the same cannot be said for the US
or Israel.

There is an over riding factor
There are 16 million Jews - world wide.
There are 1.2 billion muslims - worldwide.
The Koran calls upon the muslims to eliminate the Jews. It hasn't happened in a millennium and a half of trying.

The God of the Jews is real.
Allah is not.
