Bush agrees to submit NSA wiretaps to FISA courts
Stop The ACLU ^ | 13-July-2006 | John Stephenson

The ACLU and liberals can now rejoice!!!

Announced by Arlen Specter, reported by CNN and Fox. Hasn’t hit the wires yet but I should have a link soon. Specter called the negotiations with the White House “torturous.”

After giving Geneva rights to the terrorists, the administration are really taking it in the pants this week. My initial reaction is a bit of shock and some disappointment.

I guess they made Arlen wear a lampshade on his head.

Arlen's interpretation plus MSM reporting equals nothing to go crazy over.

Supposedly we retired the SR71 without a replacement.

Supposedly we are giving up this NSA tool without some other backup.

I don't think so in either case.

The White House has agreed to support a bill that could add a new layer of judicial oversight to the Bush administration's controversial eavesdropping program, Senate Judiciary Chairman Arlen Specter said Thursday.

The legislation would authorize the secretive Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court to review the constitutionality of the National Security Agency's most high-profile monitoring operations, said the Pennsylvania Republican.

It doesn't matter what the White House agreed to and even if it passes in law it would take a Constitutional Amendment to strip the President's Authority. I would bet that it merely sets a time restriction on the WH to authorize the action and anything after that has to go to FISA.

Bush caves again. After a brilliant first term, he is setting himself up for a legacy as a very tepid and mediocre President.

Somebody at 1600 PA Avenue (Josh Bolton? Karl Rove?) decided to deflate the beach ball with which the little Democrat children have been playing this summer.

I suspect tht you are right. Once these programs are "outed" and compromised, they have little value. The CIA's function evolved into the NRO, DIA , NSA and other functions that were more productive and less politically volatile, until the rats found them and ratted them out.

IMO you just may be wrong with your assumptions.

President Bush, as often said, is playing CHESS and the SCOTUS, MSM, Democrats, Specter, et al are playing CHECKERS.

Why? If, G*d forbid, we have another terrorist attack on this country, the Democrats, SCOTUS, Specter, MSM, et al will look like the "weak on terror" fools they really are.

President Bush is doing everything he can to protect the citizens of this country and is being undermined by every liberal and some conservatives. The SCOTUS decision to grant Geneva Convention status to terrorists was the most blatant support of terrorism in this century. This decision will come back to bite the US in the butt and GWB will probably say, "I could have told you so".

If he doesn't, he should.

All the bill does is sends the unchanged program to FISA to determine Constitutionality which has already ruled on at least once and then the Congress will update the law.

Still, it was terribly difficult to attach the alligator clips on the battery wires to his testicles.

Judging from the recent Novak revelations on Plame...it seems more and more to me tha the CIA is just a diversion anymore and flypaper for all the anti-American moles!

Let's hope the NSA and DIA etc are still productive!

It was difficult because he doesn't have any.
