According to CNET, the US Justice Department is giving the full Jack Abramoff to a bill sponsored by Sen Mike DeWine (R-OH) requiring all ISPs to build a dedicated info-structure for government eavesdropping. If this passes, yours, mine, and everybody’s Web surfing will be fair and legal game for Big Blowhard to peruse.
What are its chances? 2006 is another election year soon to be tainted by Karl Rove’s with-us-or-against-us strategy. If he has his way by this fall, legislators who don’t support the Bush Adm’n’s newest national security measures may as well show up at campaign events wearing a kaffiye. Because it’s not about the Constitution, or civil rights, or the land of the free and the home of the brave – it’s about politics and winning.
FACT: The current FISA law provides more than adequate access to anyone’s deep dark secrets, digital and otherwise.
FUN FACT: With so many of his homies under investigation, Sen DeWine is the titular head of the most corrupt Republican political machine in the country.
FUNNIER FACT: Washingtonienne, Jessica Cutler (Caution: nasty-bits alert), posted her X-RATED blog from her computer in DeWine’s senate office.

Joe, I hate to break it to you, but not one single sitting member of Congress has the brains God gave a bastard goose on this topic, DeWine included. The federal government is already watching the Internet, Joe. Right now. Right at this very moment. They're reading your screen as you're reading this and Rove is turning to Cheney and asking "is this Comrade reliable?"
That is, unless you're using a Windows machine, Joe, which is what I recommend to all of my friends worried about security. Windows is essentially unbreakable but Rove got to Gates and had him open all these backdoors for the government with these little programs called "patches." Don't use them, Joe. They're traps.
