Semper lie:Fake veteran must wear sandwich board (U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy for SCOTUS )

A Whitefish man was sentenced Thursday to spend 50 hours wearing a sandwich board with the words, “I am a liar. I am not a Marine. I have never served my country.” Chief U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy in Missoula also sentenced William Horvath to four months of house arrest for making a false statement.

Horvath, 36, was convicted of making a false statement — a felony. According to court documents, in 2001 he told a probation officer that he served time in the U.S. Marine Corps. The probation officer was gathering information on Horvath on a prior charge of being a fugitive in possession of firearms or ammunition.

A veteran himself, Molloy ordered Horvath to perform 50 hours of community service by marching in front of the U.S. courthouse in Missoula during regular business hours. He must wear a sandwich board with large letters that will read, “I am a liar. I am not a Marine,”

...I wonder if that appplies to false statements made on message boards? DU would lose half their members the first day.

The only improvement I could suggest is that those fifty hours be one hour at closing time every Friday night and every Saturday night at the local VFW for the next twenty five weeks.

Entire episodes could be produced! Our veterans would never need anything again! They would be rolling in funding!

It's not so unusual nowadays. I have seen people sentenced to carrying signs "I am a thief" or "I am a DUI offender" and the like......

This is an excellent first step in exposing the liars, fakers and the Kerry wannabees.

If this had been done during the Nam War, as well as trying Kerry for treason and falsehoods about our veterans and his mentor Kennedy. Things would be different today.

I'd think this violates the letter of the constitution as "unusual punishment".

Just an anecdote, but when I was perusing an Army leadership manual back in '87, this type of punishment or corrective counselling was specifically identified as "how not to do it".

I'd be surprised if that has changed, or if the USMC views the matter differently.

I doubt they would but let him try to make basic, if he can do it, then he deserves the title of Marine.

Remember the Admiral during ClinToon Administration, who was about to be appointed as chairman of the Joint Chiefs ...(wearing non awarded combat medals).

He bit the bullet.

The judge missed out on a secondary choice punishment by not having the backside of the sandwich board say "Kick Here"! :-)

It's a good, creative sentence

This reminds me of a story a Park Ranger at Yellowstone NP told me about a guy who mistakenly (and illegally) shot a moose when he was hunting elk near the park. Other than both animals having 4 legs, they really don't look much alike at all. When convicted, the Judge sentenced the guy to 7 days in jail. The Judge also had large posters put in his cell, one of a moose, with the caption "this is a moose", and the other of an elk, with the caption "this is an elk", just so this guy would know the difference in the future. Gotta love Judges with a sense of humor......

That will have to be adjusted a little.

Maybe present the biggest loser with a latrine shovel...or panties on the head.

Ohhh! Open each episode with Pvt. England bring the star of the show out on a leash!
