Hi all....
FReepers have been very helpful in the past and I wanted to touch base to see if you could help again.
Our city council is debating putting Sunday alcohol sales on the ballot, yet again. The matter has been defeated twice in the past few years, but they are considering the referendum again.
While I am a believer of seperation of church and state, I also believe in keeping the Sabbath holy....can this be reconciled? I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments on any experience any of you have had with this issue...

I must depart now, but the correct answer to your question , "Blue laws good or bad?", is BAD.
Actually, there are probably more than two. But in the 1600's, the source of the Blue Laws, CT in particular [see wikipedia, I posted the list and forgot the link] Sunday was it.
I'm glad I can buy beer on Sunday. However, I do remember a Massachusetts liquor store owner being bummed that, after the blue law was repealed, he had to work on Sundays to compete.
No, I'm not confusing anything. You are unwilling to recognize that how one views rights is a matter of philosoophy which you again demonstrated when you said "By any measure".
You don't see how a day of rest can be a secular goal? Heck, even Earl Warren saw that one.
You know, I don't get what the big deal is. One can argue that one's rights are trampled by any law. If someone has needs outside the law, we're supposed to accomodate him?
Well, yes, except that it's not. You can get a haircut anywhere on Sunday. After noon, of course! ;o)
I am guessing that you are against any sort of ballot initiative.
If a local community comes to a consensus that they want to observe or not observe blue laws, it is not reasonable that they should be forced to bow to the will of vocal minority. Such coercion of the majority applied broadly would lead to chaos and foolishly accomodates the wishes of the squeaky wheel at the expense of the wishes of everyone else.
How many people were coming out of church at 8:00 AM Hawaiian time?
I got to stop getting into converstations about this stuff. Same with the legalize marijuana crowd.
No woman I ever knew said 12 inches was inadequate, Bub!
Wow, that beer made his hair turn white!
State or local governments cannot "deprive any person of life, liberty or property without due process of law. --"
As Justice Harlan recognized:
"-- The full scope of the liberty guaranteed by the Due Process Clause `cannot be found in or limited by the precise terms of the specific guarantees elsewhere provided in the Constitution.
This `liberty´ is not a series of isolated points pricked out in terms of the taking of property;
-- the freedom of speech, press, and religion;
-- the right to keep and bear arms;
-- the freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures; and so on.
It is a rational continuum which, broadly speaking, includes a freedom from all substantial arbitrary impositions and purposeless restraints, . . .

All laws prohibiting the sale of alcohol on Sunday at any time of day should be abolished. I believe in freedom. Nobody is compelled to buy alcohol. Nobody should force their belief system on others.
