VANITY: Sunday Alcohol Sales....Blue laws good or bad?
Georgia Dawg

Posted on 07/06/2006 11:35:38 AM PDT by GeorgiaDawg

Hi all....

FReepers have been very helpful in the past and I wanted to touch base to see if you could help again.

Our city council is debating putting Sunday alcohol sales on the ballot, yet again. The matter has been defeated twice in the past few years, but they are considering the referendum again.

While I am a believer of seperation of church and state, I also believe in keeping the Sabbath holy....can this be reconciled? I'd appreciate any thoughts or comments on any experience any of you have had with this issue...

You are an example:
Most people do not understand 2000 years of Western Civilization and how it got there. In their desparation to be "free" they lost the codes that have made success.

They also think that they are smarter than their forefathers. They do not understand that the forefathers had these codes becasue those men had a real understanding of human nature and how it is fallen, as well as comprehending what it took to elevate it.

You're begging for a suicide bomber from a certain unnamed religion unless you include the entire day of Friday

Actually, to keep them happy you'd have to ban alcohol sales every day.

I also believe in keeping the Sabbath holy

So do I. What does that have to do with prohibitionist bible-thumpers throwing their particular beliefs at me? I drink wine with communion, after all.

Does the proposed regulation or law require everyone to purchase alcohol on Sunday or is the decision up to the individual. If the choice to purchase is wholly discretionary, what business is it for you or me to impose our beliefs on others?

Ah, yes, a law that restricts sales on Sunday because of the tradition that Sunday is a day of rest is surely equal to Islamic law.

No one has to go. I seldom shop on a Sunday; I prefer it as a quiet day. And we certainly keep a good wine cellar and bar, so having to suddenly buy supplies never enters the equation.

"Maybe. But it's still not any of your business.

The more of these laws which violate rights that are passed, the quicker the frog is cooked.

Disagree.

There are structures and laws on which a culture and civilization is based. This was foundational.

How does it trample your rights?

Any law which forbids me from engaging in commerce which does not violate the rights of others, is trampling my rights.

You ever shop at Albertson's? If you do, you may as well start spewing at them right now because I promise you they will never sell liquor before noon on Sunday. Wanna know why? Because they're LDS, that's why. Good luck with your lawsuit.

Any comment that assumes anything about me that I have not provided will be ignored.

Further, I do not advocate government involvement in forbidding or compelling any business to sell anything or be open or closed at certain hours.

Having grown up in S. Baptist country I think the thinking goes like this; Any poor soul out there who has succumbed to the siren of evil alcohol must be allowed time to sober up. Hopefully the poor creature, upon being temporarily released from the clutches of the bottle, will, in his moment of sobriety, seek deliverance in the refuge of the church.

In other words, if a wino wakes up on Sunday morning and can't buy any alcohol, he might stay sober long enough to go to church and seek the Lord's help.

Many laws that are now considered by the legal system to be secular, yes, including Blue Laws (read the Warren's Court decision upholding Blue Laws), had a basis in religion at some point in time.

My reference to Pearl Harbor is based on my understanding that people were bombed there as they were leaving church. It is viewed by some, like me, to have been an added insult. The point is to respect the sabbath whether or not one observes it.

what does it matter? if i want to drink on sunday and i can't buy then, i make sure to buy it saturday night. like here in MI, Christmas is a dry holiday, so right before liquor stores close Christmas eve, there's usually a pileup.
people are going to drink one way or another, you can't stop that. might as well let them get their booze on sunday rather than run the risk of them going out saturday and driving to the store drunk before they close.

My philosophical view is personal, not to mention irrelevant to my statements, which stand on their own.

I can't believe the reply of most of the FReepers here. Look, if a person can't go one day out of seven without buying alcohol, they surely have problems.

A number of us are quite chagrined that we would ever see a comment like that on Free Republic. We know it happens, but it remains disturbing.

I was in high school over thirty years ago, and never heard anything of the kind. Must have been peculiar to your region.
