We Need Fewer Secrets
By Jimmy Carter Monday, July 3, 2006; A21
The U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) turns 40 tomorrow, the day we celebrate our independence. But this anniversary will not be a day of celebration for the right to information in our country. Our government leaders have become increasingly obsessed with secrecy. Obstructionist policies and deficient practices have ensured that many important public documents and official actions remain hidden from our view.
The events in our nation today -- war, civil rights violations, spiraling energy costs, campaign finance and lobbyist scandals -- dictate the growing need and citizens' desire for access to public documents. A poll conducted last year found that 70 percent of Americans are either somewhat or very concerned about government secrecy. This is understandable when the U.S. government uses at least 50 designations to restrict unclassified information and created 81 percent more "secrets" in 2005 than in 2000, according to the watchdog coalition OpenTheGovernment.org.

More like two peaNUTS in a pod.
Was there a worse president before that? I don't think so. Jimmy was the worst of all time. By a mile.
This man lost all credibility with his faux Nobel Peace Prize. It should have been rescinded.
Two slices of bread + liberal application of peanut butter + four slices of bologna = Jimmah Carter Sandwich
i actually feel sorry for him.....he is like one of those sad old men u see -- moaning about how cruel the world is..
Fewer secrets? Ok....coupled with fewer politicans. And I'd start with the senate. There is no reason today to have 100 senators...so lets cut them by 50 percent and limit it to one per state. I just saved the US government $250 million on office space, vehicles, travel, salaries, and personnel support.
So lets move on...to national parks. Establish 2012 as the final day that the US government pays any support for national parks. Either they survive by entry fees alone or they revert to state property. I just saved the nation another $750 million.
Finally, US troops. Bring them home from Japan, South Korea, Europe, Africa, etc. Other than real contingency operations...no more forward support. Our troops will spend their careers training and living in the US and only leave the country when wars or contingencies occur. I just saved the nation another $10 billion.
Perhaps Jimmy is thinking with only half his brain as usual....but if he'd consider the various wasteful areas of the government...we could make real change that people would appreciate.
Sure Jimmuh, cite stats from a fringe left-winged organization. Geez, what a GOOBER!
During the Iran hostage crisis.
Right.
We need fewer secrets.
Here's my contribution.
Psst.
This guy is a sanctimonious body part.
Pass it on.
Then why doesn't the Carter Center make its donor info more easily available, Jimmy...?
Oh, the worst President ever - FDR, by well over a mile.
Let's start with this one, even though it's no secret:
One the other hand...keep talking Jimmy.
Sheesh
A Constitutional Amendment, along the lines of that which now limits the number of terms for President to a total of two (e.g., eight years period), for all elected/appointed positions within the Federal government, along with their staff personnel being subject to the same constraints.
Term limits by law is an idea whose time has come!
Your fly's open.
He was NOT the worst president of the last 100 years-he was the worst president in the last 230 years.
