John Harwood of the Wall Street Journal just said that he doesn't know of anyone on the New York Times staff or editorial department that felt they didn't publish the SWIFT story after due consideration.

I'm not sure if you're referring to a different quote or if I heard the same one differently, but what I heard him say is that no one at the WSJ or NYT thinks they published this for political reasons.  Journalists are above such things, don't you know?

Unfortunately he revealed the problem with the MSM. That is to say, the disconnect they have with E plebnista*.

Mr. Harwood, if you dare, get out and speak with 'We the people.' Your outlook may change significantly on that.

*Fans of Star Trek (the original series) will hopefully get the reference :o)

I was truly shocked by how out of touch Harwood, Safire, Priest and Mitchell all were.  As someone pointed out earlier, they truly operate inside a bubble, talking only to one another and totally ignorant of anything outside of their manufactured reality.

And, yes, I got the reference.  Though it took me forever to look up which episode it was from: "The Omega Glory."

Fishtalk, DemsRLosers gave the best explanation of what we lost when the NYT leaked the story that I've seen. Also, I will note that William Bennett said today that he knows there are air marshalls, but he doesn't know which flights and what they look like.

Andrew McCarthy explained to Hugh Hewitt yesterday what was the real damage of the Times' stories. Terrorists and thir financial backers assumed the US was tracking their transactions to try to get at their MONEY. The SWIFT program was not designed to get their MONEY, it was designed to get THEM. To trace the movements of the money in order to find the terrorists who ultimately receive the money. We were deliberately not going after the money, which made the terrorists think they were safe. We were not even getting the information from SWIFT in realtime, but after the fact, so it wasn't useful for us to get at the money, but it was still useful to track down the terrorists in the field who ultimately received the money. Hambali was caught using this program precisely because we never moved to seize the money, we USED the money to find HIM and arrest him. Now they know we are doing this and they will simply stop using any longterm bank accounts to move their money so by the time we get the data from SWIFT it won't be useful in finding them. The dumbasses at the New York Times think this doesn't matter, but it does. It's a very serious setback in our ability to stealthily track down these bad guys without them seeing us coming.
The fact that Keller and Baquet are still trying to cover their asses ovr a week later should tell us they know they really stepped in it and they "have some 'splainin' to do" to the American people. The Fox News poll must have really shook them. America is NOT with them this time and I don't see how they recover. We need to keep up the pressure.

It's hard to argue a gut reaction to logic. Even though you could very well be right, my gut tells me it's more than that.

FNC has included so many liberals into their lineup that people are not only looking for other shows but changing their viewing habits. Bill O'Reilly started it, if I remember right, as he became more of a populist, vocally against the death penalty and trashing the Swiftboat Veterans and the book Unfit for Command. Add in Greta and Geraldo and many people went to see other things and have not returned.

There are some people who may not be watching CNN on a regular basis yet but many conservatives I know are going back to see if they have changed, and if so how much.

As for talk radio, I know a lot of conservatives who turn the dial when a host stays on an issue too long or gets too radical. My guess is talk radio is down in numbers too but will crank back up as the election nears or if some major story pitting left versus right comes up.

Excellent post Miss Marple and that is exactly what the NYT printed that makes everyone so mad, publishing the details.

So Unnecessary to do so.

It's really all politics all the time for those ideologues like the NYT. They hate bush and will do anything to stop anything he does. Even a President trying to fight a war. There are no bounds for that paper and they need to be punished. Punish them and I know they will fold like a cheap suit.

When H&C first came on the air, they did have an open phone segment at the end of the show (in fact, I got through once). I don't remember when they stopped it. Go read the Corner about the take on the MTP round table; I refuse to watch MTP as I have caught Mr. Russert in one too many lies. The press today surely showed their arrogance, and it will backfire on them, I'm certain of it.

LOL. I think Jonah Goldberg (who has a lovely mother, by the way) has pretty much captured the MTP roundtable.

Actually I very much doubt that the casino's will be shut down. If it is I suspect that the deer hunters in South Jersey will be finding a lot more skeletons in the Pine Barrens than normal this winter.

Great post,H&C is becoming quite predictable with the same old tired guests and all too predictable stories. Not only that they have 8 minute segments with anywhere from 4-6 participants, do the math! No on gets time to develop any meaningful thoughts at all.

on the other hand, talk radio shows have three hours, no wonder they are so popular.

The old Grey Lady and her left coast counterpart really doth protest too much. Telling. They are trying to set up a situation in which the public will be "on their side" if the government goes after them to get their sources. I don't think they are going to succeed. They tried to outnumber and out talk Bill Bennett and Fred Thompson today, but they did not succeed. Believe me, DBM, we actually are not that stupid.

I'm ROFL!!! The vanquished Cici Connelly was banished to Mexico to report on the election. LOL ... how's it feel, Cici, to be removed from the most credible political panel in TV?? She's trying SO hard to make this appearance make her look like a real journalist.

I'm not sure if you're referring to a different quote or if I heard the same one differently [snip]

I'll defer to you as I was typing another response on FR and listening at the same time (Kids... don't try this at home) so I may have heard something not actually said.

But the impression I got out of it, was that they published it only after thoroughly thinking it through {/sarcasm}.

But I have to say this, if the media feels they are so right, why are they feeling so scared?

I think they've heard from America in the past week and find that they're held in less esteem than used-car salesmen or even (gasp) politicians.

While channel surfing, I did get a glance of Lichtblau on Reliable Sources, and tell me that he doesn't have that deer in the headlights look on his face.

If I were him, I might want to see if I can get my deposit back on my summer rental, because if the Justice Department actively pursues this case and if Lichtblau wishes to not reveal a source in front of a grand jury, he may not be spending the summer at the beach in the Hamptons or on Martha's Vineyard or the Jersey shore, but in a place, courtesy of his Uncle Sam.

IMHO MSM are only fawning over McCain to convince him to run, if he does and especially if he horrors above horrors got the nomination - the skeltons would come out of cupboard by his so called media friends.
