An Air Force installation in Colorado Springs and one near Denver are operating with heightened security.
The Cheyenne Mountain Air Station, which houses NORAD, is now at "Bravo-Plus".
There are five levels of alert: normal, Alpha (low), Bravo (medium), Charlie (high) and Delta (critical). Bravo-Plus is slightly higher than a medium threat level.
Space Command would not comment on the reason for the security increase.
The order also affects Vandenberg Air Force Base in California and Patrick air force base in Florida.

"Then I'd think the NM alternate landing site would also be on alert." Landing sites aren't the issue; remote-control terminals are.

i remember after 1 1/2+ years of PML's from alpha to delta in panama, when the US finally invaded the country in dec. 89 a new one, echo, was designated, for 'active military operations in progress.' after a while (pre-invasion) if we weren't on charlie at minimum you just ignored it, i don't think they removed the PML from early 88. I do assume in c.s. they don't suffer from PML exhaustion at this point.

Alpha is probably equal to a readiness level twice what can be described as 'normal'.
Shuttle is probably key, but do not rule out NK and the possibility of their launch coinciding with the shuttle launch

My bet is Iran or Syria launching some sort of ballistic missile at Israel in support of the Palis.

I think NK is trying to launch something into orbit that we don't want up there.
Like a spy satellite that would provide pictures of the US or Japan.
Or a killer satellite. For those who don't believe the exist, one was demonstrated by the Russians, over the United States. They knocked off one of their own old satellites.
Oh, this happened when I was newly married. About 26 years ago.

The "loose lips" policy should be reminded to all.
Excuse me, but if the US is in trouble "I" want to know so I can prepare. Loose Lips does not apply here. The security measures they might use IS but not information that WE need to protect ourselves!

The shuttle is the most obvious answer but if that was the case, wouldn't the increased security alert also have been applied to Edwards, McDill, and the other bases involved?
