Bin Laden Says Will Take Fight to America
(Full Story)

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden said his group reserved the right to fight the United States on its land and warned Washington and the world community against sending forces to Somalia, according to an Internet audio tape.

"We will fight its (U.S.) soldiers on the land of Somalia ... and we reserve the right to punish it on its land and anywhere possible," said the speaker, who sounded like the Saudi-born militant.

"We warn all of the countries in the world not to respond to America by sending international troops to Somalia," he said of the African nation where Islamists' power is rising.

Man cuts off hand in butcher shop

Snip: In a surreal scene, police said a man purposely cut off one of his hands in a Springfield butcher shop Saturday evening. The grisly incident occurred in Super Halal Meat along the 7000 block of Spring Garden Drive, which bisects Brookfield Plaza, home to numerous Asian, Indian and Middle Eastern eateries and markets. "I'm still numb talking about it," said Vikas Sinsunwal, who saw the man after he severed his hand.

Sinsunwal said he was outside his parents store, Niralla Sweets, when the man, announcing "I did this for Allah," approached his parents' shop lifting his bloody left arm into the air. "I could actually see bone in his wrist," he said.

Fate of 4,700 Mazdas unknowns as ship flounders

Snip: Some 1,500 hot-selling Mazda3 cars destined for the Canadian market are aboard a cargo ship floundering in the rough seas off Alaska's Aleutian Islands. Reports say that Mitsui's Cougar Ace has a cargo of at least 4,700 Mazda Motor Corp. vehicles, a total of which is estimated to be worth $117.5 million.,

The ship, Mitsui O.S.K.'s Cougar Ace, was still afloat yesterday and its owner was weighing a salvage operation, said Mazda Canada spokesperson Greg Young. The ship's crew were evacuated.

"We don't know the status of the vehicles," Mr. Young said. "All we've seen is the ship lying on its side."

Judge backs release of Islamic fundraiser

LOS ANGELES - A federal judge on Friday denied a government appeal to keep incarcerated a top fundraiser for an Islamic charity the government says has ties to terrorism.

The motion came a day after U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter ordered the release without bond of Abdel-Jabbar Hamdan, 45, who is being held at the Terminal Island federal detention facility.

Hatter denied the motion without comment, according to court documents filed late Friday.

"The judge clearly said the government has no business detaining him," said Hamdan's attorney, Ranjana Natarajan of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

It was unclear when Hamdan could be released, or whether the government would appeal to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Virginia Kice, spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the department was aware of the judge's decision and was reviewing its legal options.

Contacted at her home late Friday, Hamdan's wife, Entesar Hamdan, said she was unaware of the ruling but hoped the government wouldn't take the case any further.

"I didn't expect they would take it one last step," she said. "It's sad. It's already been two years of his life, of our lives."

Hamdan, who founded a mosque in Anaheim, was arrested on immigration charges in July 2004 as federal authorities unsealed an indictment against the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development. The government charged that the Texas-based charity funneled millions to the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

The following month, Hamdan was ordered deported on the immigration charges. His requests to be released on bond while he fights the charges had been denied until this week.

Pro-Lebanese protesters mob Australian PM's car
AP ^ | July 29, 2006

Posted on 07/29/2006 1:31:05 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Violent scuffles broke out between police and pro-Lebanon protesters who mobbed Australia's prime minister Saturday demanding more government action to bring peace in the Middle East, a news agency reported.

Prime Minister John Howard was leaving a state conference of his Liberal Party in the west coast city of Perth when about 200 protesters of Lebanese descent mobbed his car, Australian Associated Press said.

Protesters punched and kicked police and threw projectiles at the car, AAP reported.

Howard's entourage sped from the scene as police wrestled protesters to the ground, it said.

At least one protester was arrested and taken away by police.

Protest leader Muhammad El Khatib said he has family in Lebanon and the Australian government was not doing enough to broker peace in the region.

"Hizbullah is protecting Lebanon, they are freedom fighters, not terrorists," he said.

U.S. Accuses Indian Firms of Missile Sales to Iran
U.S. officials said yesterday the Bush administration plans to sanction two Indian firms for transfers of “dual-use items related to missiles” to Iran (see GSN, July 25).

“We are going to report to Congress about transactions by two private Indian companies with Iran” under the U.S. Iran-Syria Nonproliferation Act, one official told Reuters.

The administration is required to report violations of the law to Congress every six months, Reuters reported, though sanctions are applied at the discretion of the White House. Details of the sanctions to be imposed against the Indian firms were not disclosed.

A U.S. official said the administration attempted to inform Congress about the sanctions before the House voted Wednesday on legislation to implement a U.S.-Indian civilian nuclear technology sharing agreement (see GSN, July 27).

However, a congressional aide said he did not learn of the report until yesterday.

“Clearly they were waiting for the House to vote on the nuclear agreement,” the aide said. He said lawmakers, had they known of the development, might have deferred that vote until India was pressed for more cooperation on curtailing Iran’s controversial nuclear program (Carol Giacomo, Reuters, July 27).
