Bin Laden Says Will Take Fight to America
(Full Story)

Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden said his group reserved the right to fight the United States on its land and warned Washington and the world community against sending forces to Somalia, according to an Internet audio tape.

"We will fight its (U.S.) soldiers on the land of Somalia ... and we reserve the right to punish it on its land and anywhere possible," said the speaker, who sounded like the Saudi-born militant.

"We warn all of the countries in the world not to respond to America by sending international troops to Somalia," he said of the African nation where Islamists' power is rising.

Arab leaders mull Israel-Hezbollah crisis

It's more than just a matter of pride. Israel fears any perceived weakness in its current fight against Hezbollah will be a boost to all Islamic militants out to destroy it and to their main patron, Iran.

"From the Israeli point of view, to reach a cease-fire right now without reaching some or most of its strategic goals is not just counterproductive but dangerous," said Israeli counterterrorism expert Boaz Ganor.

Because of the near impossibility of beginning a negotiating process with either Hezbollah or Iran - and considering the weakness of the Lebanese government - Ganor argues the right address for negotiations is Syria, which like Iran, supports, arms and funds Hezbollah. However, Israel, Syria and Lebanon will not be at the conference.

Assembling such a force is likely to prove difficult. Israel says it prefers a NATO-led coalition, but the alliance's member states are already stretched in missions elsewhere. And the traumatic history of peacekeeping in Lebanon works against nations committing themselves to another try.

The complexity of the negotiations makes a quick resolution of the crisis "almost unimaginable," said Aaron David Miller, a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center.

Mahdi Abdul-Hadi, the director of the Palestinian think tank Passia, argues that negotiations on the Lebanon fighting should not be handled separately from Israel's other crisis: a battle in the Gaza Strip with Hamas, which captured an Israeli soldier June 25.

"I don't see Hamas selling out Hezbollah for a separate deal," Abdul-Hadi said.

"People in Gaza as well as in Beirut are accepting the sacrifices, are accepting the pain and they are filled with steadfastness, with national pride and no surrender," he said.

Press Trust of India: WASHINGTON, JULY 25: A prominent American lawmaker asked Bush administration to scrap the sale of F-16s to Pakistan, saying the acquisition of the US-made fighter jets plus the plutonium reactor reportedly being built by Islamabad equals a ‘catastrophe.’

In a ‘dear colleague’ letter written in the wake of reports about the plutonium reactor, Gary Ackerman, the co chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans said, ‘at any time this news would be unwelcome’.

Pointing to the Washington Post piece on Tuesday about the dramatic expansion in Pakistan's nuclear weapons programme, Ackerman said the import of the story is ‘truly alarming’ in the context of a pending sale by US of F-16 fighter-bombers.

“Despite assurances by the Bush administration that these aircraft will not be misused, or their technology transferred to other countries like China, once these planes have been delivered to Pakistan, there is, in fact, absolutely nothing we can do to prevent misuse,” the New York Democrat said in his letter.

"Based on history and strategic analysis, there is every reason to believe the contrary that these F-16s will be drafted for use as nuclear weapons delivery vehicles, and that they will be picked apart by potential adversaries to answer questions about our aviation capabilities," he said. "Help stop a catastrophe before it happens. And stop the sale of F-16s to Pakistan," the lawmaker, also a senior member in the House International Relations Committee said.

While Islamabad has certainly provided critical assistance in the war on terror, this recognition should not entail the transfer of aircraft that is capable of delivering nuclear weapons, Ackerman said. “The sale of F-16s has nothing whatsoever to do with the requirements of the war on terror and everything to do with the plutonium-producing heavy-water reactor Islamabad has found the resources to procure,” he added.

French anti-terrorist services have been paying particular attention to persons linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar e Toiba movement ever since the Indian authorities voiced their conviction that it was behind bomb attacks that claimed 182 lives in Bombay on July 11.

Numerous members of Lashkar e Toiba live in the Paris region. The organization is known to have offered logistical support to Britain's Richard Reid who was arrested after trying to blow up an airliner on its way from Paris to Miami by igniting a bomb in his shoe. London is the leading center in Europe for Lashkar e Toiba but its members have also installed themselves in Paris (in the 19th arrondissement) and in the northern suburbs, where they recruit young North Africans. Recently, French security uncovered a network financing the movement through halal butchers in Paris.

A reader noticed something curious in a video from last night's "NBC Nightly News." Richard Engel, the network's Beirut bureau chief, is reporting from southern Lebanon, and at 1:07 in the video, as he's saying, "In Sidon, we found part of the financial district flattened," you briefly see an image of what look like uncut sheets of U.S. hundred-dollar bills.

Now, it's possible to buy uncut sheets from the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, at premiums ranging from 12.5% to 275% over face value--but apparently only in denominations of up to $50. Anyhow, somehow we doubt these were collectibles.

A Treasury Department press release dated June 10, 2004, reports that Hezbollah has been involved in counterfeiting American money:

One of the most prominent and influential members of the Hizballah terrorist organization, along with two of his companies, was designated by the Treasury Department today under Executive Order 13224. Assad Ahmad Barakat has close ties with Hizballah leadership and has worked closely with numerous Islamic extremists and suspected Hizballah associates in South America's tri-border area (TBA), made up of Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina. . . .

Barakat has also been involved in a counterfeiting ring that distributes fake U.S. dollars and generates cash to fund Hizballah operations. As of early 2001, Barakat was one of two individuals reportedly in charge of distribution and sale of the counterfeit currency in the TBA.

Was this funny money in Engel's report from Sidon? We don't know, but it'd be a good question for him to investigate.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "RICHMOND, Virginia (AP) -- Carl M. Brashear, the first black U.S. Navy diver who was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. in the 2000 film "Men of Honor," died Tuesday. He was 75.

Brashear died at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth of respiratory and heart failure, the medical center said.

Brashear retired from the Navy in 1979 after more than 30 years of service. He was the first Navy diver to be restored to full active duty as an amputee, the result of a leg injury he sustained during a salvage operation."

BRUSSELS (EJP)--- The Brussels Jewish Memorial for Holocaust victims has been vandalised, in an attack described as "devastating" by the head of a Belgian Jewish association.

Judith Kronfeld, secretary general of the “Union of deportees in Belgium-Sons and Daughters of deportation” organisation, spoke of a “scene of devastation” which was discovered Monday night.

The gate of the Memorial’s crypt was pulled out, documents were destroyed, windows broken and an urn containing ashes from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi death camp was desecrated and emptied.

“Anti-Semitic vandals, moved by a destructive rage, left behind a scene of devastation,” Kronfeld said.

Condoms and excrements were also found on the floor of the Memorial which is located in Anderlecht, a Brussels district with an important Arab population.

Lebanon war link?

Asked by EJP if this could have a link with current events in the Middle East, Kronfeld said: “I would not say that. It’s possible. It is not the first time there is vandalism in the Memorial with swastikas but it is the first time that such destruction happened,” she added.

No inscription was found Monday night. Police arrived on the scene Tuesday morning.

The Brussels National Monument to the Jewish Martyrs of Belgium bears the names of 25,411 men, women and children deported from Belgium to Auschwitz-Birkenau during WWII.

“This is sacred place of meditation and memory for the families of the people deported during the war. But is also a place for any democrat in Belgium to call for vigilance against anti-Semitic, racist and xenophobic feelings,” the Union of deportees in Belgium said.

“To attack the Memorial is to attack the entire Jewish community in Belgium, the Jewish people and the entire democratic population in this country. Nothing can justify or excuse such an act,” it said in a press release.
