A 5-month-old baby died in a minivan Wednesday after the mother apparently forgot to drop the child off at day care.
The tragedy was discovered about 5:30 p.m. outside the Wonder Years 2 day care. The baby's mother stopped at the day care after work to pick up the child and was told by staff that the baby had not been dropped off. She realized then that the baby had been in her minivan all day.
"The mother had forgotten to drop off the child at day care in the morning," said Curt Kreun, owner of Wonder Years 2. "She actually came in the building to pick up the child and then realized what had happened."
The child was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, according to Sgt. Jeff Burgess of the Grand Forks Police Department. A Wonder Years 2 staff member made the 911 call, according to Kreun.

If the parents responsible were prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, I'll bet memories would improve nationwide...
"No mention of the child who suffered? Very telling." Spare me your sanctimony. It is evident the child suffered terribly and that is horrible. You think the mother doesn't know that? You think that doesn't haunt her? You think she would have intentionally left the child to suffer like that? You think you care about that baby more than the mother does? You're acting very haughty. I hope people are more decent to you when you are down.
There is NO excuse for this ..You have to be a complete MORON to forget you have your kid in car with you..Beyond belief that someone can be that much of an air head.
Mudrer charges are in order.
"Obviously, that is just what happened..because she didn't even notice the baby was in the car seat when she went back to pick her baby up..." Exactly.
If you need a damn sensor in a car seat to remind you that your child is in the car then you need to be in jail because you are too friggin STUPID to be left out in society..Please , give me a brake.
Yes, yes, we get the point. Mommies who work are eeeeeevil, whether you know what their jobs or situations are or not. Just eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil. The AntiChrist. We get it.
I agree with you. Being a parent implies a certain amount of responsibility. If you are THAT stupid to forget a kid in the car all day you are one dangerous idiot and need to be put somewhere where you can't hurt anyone else. No excuse for this .
She's alive. Her child is dead. This is legalized infanticide.
I'll tell you one thing we NEVER EVER hear about: a mother who became so engrossed in playing with her children that she forgot to show up for work!
You are right...it is not implausible. In our society today, particularly in urban areas, people are stressed right to the breaking point trying to keep up with the pace of life. There are a lot of people out there practically sleep-walking (or sleep-driving) through life. The work day, and all the little time left around those stretched-out hours, have become barely controlled chaos for a huge part of our population. Our society definitely stresses the limits of human capability.
She was so ignoring that little inconvenience in the back seat that she (perhaps) unconsciously let the baby die. No more babies for this woman.
I hope you're one of the lucky ones who can get your kids in the base child care centers. If you have to put your kids in child care, that is the place to be. God Bless you and your husband. Military personnnel, especially the enlisted ones, are under-paid. I'll bet your husband could make a lot more in the private sector, but he is serving his country instead.
I don't think child care is the ideal situation, but I realize that is what some people have to do. I am stunned by the sanctimony around here. It reminds me of the people who added salt to the wounds of grieving parents whose kids were killed at the day care center in the OKC bombing.
Hogwash! Infanticide is when one intentionally kills her child. This woman made a horrible mistake and it will haunt her the rest of her life. You people seem incapable of distinguishing this woman from Susan Smith.
Baloney. I work for a ministry. Not much income. Yet my wife stays at home with our two baby girls. It's not about "affluence" (how much does it COST for daycare and gas/insurance on that minivan she drives, anyway?), it's about standard of living. By her selfish decisions she put herself in a position of killing her baby.
Harsh? Yeah.
And the ministry you work for is "Christian", right? (rolling eyes)
"I work for a ministry." Yikes! Some ministry! Do you blast everyone to whom you minister that way? I presume people in need of ministry are not "perfect" like you appear to be. I can just imagine.......
On a cross-country trip to New York, my husband mistakenly believed that our son was sleeping in the back seat, and drove away on the Interstate, when in fact he had gone back into the rest stop to check out the video games.
He got as far as the Pennsylvania/NJ state line he was stopped by state police, who asked him, "Did you forget something?"
Our son was 16 years old at the time. I was not on this trip, it was some "father/son" bonding experience.
