A 5-month-old baby died in a minivan Wednesday after the mother apparently forgot to drop the child off at day care.

The tragedy was discovered about 5:30 p.m. outside the Wonder Years 2 day care. The baby's mother stopped at the day care after work to pick up the child and was told by staff that the baby had not been dropped off. She realized then that the baby had been in her minivan all day.

"The mother had forgotten to drop off the child at day care in the morning," said Curt Kreun, owner of Wonder Years 2. "She actually came in the building to pick up the child and then realized what had happened."

The child was in a car seat in the back of the vehicle, according to Sgt. Jeff Burgess of the Grand Forks Police Department. A Wonder Years 2 staff member made the 911 call, according to Kreun.

"how many people here could have ever forgotten you had a child in the car with you?"

I haven't but I have had close calls where my not paying attention could have hurt my child.....

but apparently, most people here are perfect and not only have never had such moments, but haven't sinned either.......

I wonder how many would die if there was a harsh penalty for leaving a child in a car, even if it was an 'accident.'

Perhaps you will pay more close attention to your child after your admission of neglect?

nother monster here...
both children...daycare 2 times per week.
We waited for 6 years to have children just so I could only work part time.
Before you ask...
No, we do NOT have new cars...(90 and 96).
No, we do NOT take lavish vacations (camping and staying in military housing near the ocean)
No, we DO NOT go out to eat, buy fancy clothes or have big screen TV's.....

Our children are each involved in ONE activity (presently swimming lessons).

We make nearly ALL of our meals homemade with the occasional splurge on frozen pizza or hot-dogs (although last night we ate Salmon from Costco).

That is the extent of our exciting lives..

If that makes me (or my husband) monsters...well then, I guess you better sign me up.

By law, your child has to be in the back seat, with a baby seat facing backward. Can't see the kid in the rear-view. Unintended consequences?

If your child is in a crib in another room of the home, are you excused by law for being forgetful and leaving the child alone, if you run to the store in your vehicle?

Okay, I'll answer my own question.

"Yes, officer, I know my baby died but I have an explanation. You see, I was so stressed out and was so sleepy that I forgot him at home when I went to work. I didn't realize that I had forgotten him until I went to pick him up at daycare".

"Well, maam, you are going charged with blah, blah and blah and will spend a long time in jail."

Tis another form or infanticide, this forgetting you have a child when you get into your vehicle.

I'm not excusing anyone. I would not forgive myself, my wife, or my babysitter for forgetting that I, She, whomever, is responsible for my baby.

My gripe is with feel-good legislation without thorough thought of the consequences.

My initial feel is that this is such a case.

Yellowdoghunter, you're probably a really nice person...

I can confirm that. She's one of the most kind-hearted people I know.

Legislation cannot excuse bad parenting. You simply cannot blame government for killing your own child by neglect.

My goodness, you have an awfully big chip on your shoulder. What on earth did she do to you? News flash - this isn't about you and the woman who done you wrong. Get over it.

See, there you go!;)
It is an emotional issue since it involves the death of a child, hence my lengthy reply to her and a few others.

I would rather die before I see my children grace the doorstep of either a daycare or a government school. In these places you find the roots of the socialistic, godless tyranny we are currently living under.

Someone who chooses to raise their children themselves is looking down from a pedestal? So all the millions of people who raised their own children prior to the age of personal gratification at all costs were also on said pedestal?
