Dick Morris: Joe Lieberman Will Lose Primary
NewsMax ^ | 27 June 2006

Posted on 06/26/2006 4:49:21 PM PDT by Aussie Dasher

Senator and former vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman will lose the Democratic primary in Connecticut, political strategist Dick Morris predicts.

What’s more, if Lieberman then runs in the general election as an independent, he will be "so crippled” by his defeat in the August 8 primary, and his Democratic opponent Ned Lamont "so empowered,” that Lieberman will lose the general election as well and give up his seat in the Senate, says Morris.

"Indeed, by going through the primary and being defeated, he will give the GOP a good chance to win in Connecticut, which they would not have if he just ran as an independent,” Morris told NewsMax.

"But if he drops out of the primary, he will be re-elected as an independent.”

Senator Jacob Javits, in 1980, "could have avoided defeat by not fighting the Republican primary against Al D’Amato and running as an independent. But D’Amato was so empowered by the primary win, and Javits so disempowered, that D’Amato won the general election with Javits running a poor third,” Morris told Political Wire.

"Lieberman’s correct course of action is to withdraw from the primary and run as an independent. It is the only way he can get re-elected.”

Liberals have made defeating Lieberman one of their chief goals in 2006, contributing thousands of dollars to wealthy businessman Lamont’s campaign. Lamont himself is worth nearly $100 million and has poured his cash into the campaign.

And left-wing bloggers have been "constantly bashing Lieberman, especially for his fervent support of the Iraq war and his standing as the strongest Democratic supporter of President Bush’s policies there,” Time magazine reports.

Recent polls disclosed that Lieberman’s lead over Lamont, which once stood at 40 percentage points, has narrowed to 15 points, and Lamont continues to gain ground on the incumbent.

Lieberman is especially vulnerable, according to Time, because the primary tends to draw low turnouts – "and the people most motivated to vote may be those angry at Lieberman.”

So if Leiberman loses the primary, who is the GOP backing against the freak who defeats him? Anyone? I've been out of CT Yankee politics so long I couldn't tell who's who.

John,

His analysis of a situation is usually spot on, but his conclusions are are always wrong. I think this is by design so that he always gets his face on the chat shows. If he gets to good at predicting things, he then gets into the relm of Barone and whould have to put out his shingle. I do not think he wants to work that hard.

When will Morris' 15 minutes be up? With each passing day he seems more and more disconnected from what goes on.

This guy's ceiling of support is in no way over 50%. If it's over 40% I'll eat my hat.

He doesn't need over 50% in a low turnout primary -- all he has to do is get his brain-dead leftist base to the polls.

If he says he'll organize with the Democrats, then that will just defer the primary to the general election, and the same contest will result.

Not really, because non-Democrats would be able to vote for him.

True, but why would they if he announced that he'd organize with Democrats if he won?

>> If Lieberman loses the primary, the GOP needs to rally around Alan Schlesinger.

Joe "disenfrance the overseas millitary vote" Loserman had a conservative rating of only 8% from the ACU last year. The fact the lunatic wing of the Dems want to eat one of their own works in our favor regardless of whether Loserman wins the primary, loses the primary, runs as an Independant, etc. Either way the Dem base is divided and a Republican could slip in.

Loserman could narrowly win renomination, causing the anti-war nuts to sulk and stay home and having him run out of campaign funds in November after spending everything to win the primary. Result? Good chance at win for the GOP.

Loserman could narrowly lose renomination, creating an open seat and pitting the Republican against a little known far left nut. Result? Good chance at win for the GOP.

Loserman could drop out of primary and seek re-election as an independant, pitting an "Independant" and a "Democrat" who are both rapidly pro-abortion, anti-gun, tax-and-spend lefties drawing from voters of the same idelogy. Result? Good chance at win for the GOP.

No matter who "wins" the Dem nomination, Republicans "win" in this race. Never interfer when your enemy is destroying himself. The Dems were more than happy to watch George H.W. Bush and William Howard Taft self-destruct from inner-warfare with their base, and we should feel the same.

Morris is strong on analysis but weak on predictions.
\However if the dims are so frothing at the mouth they expel Lieberman for the party it will show the rest of the country how crazy they are it will will help us immensely.

Because voters like to vote for the famous and because we in Connecticut have had few nationally recognized politicians and because we're also a strong blue state, Lieberman will win both the primary & reelection.
