Confined to her bed in Atlanta by a broken ankle and arthritis, she was given a stack of blank paper by her husband, who said, "Write a book." Did she ever.
The novel's first title became its last words, "Tomorrow is another day," and at first she named the protagonist Pansy. But Pansy became Scarlett, and the title of the book published 70 years ago this week became "Gone With the Wind."
You might think that John Steinbeck, not Margaret Mitchell, was the emblematic novelist of the 1930s, and that the publishing event in American fiction in that difficult decade was his "Grapes of Wrath." Published in 1939, it captured the Depression experience that many Americans had, and that many more lived in fear of. Steinbeck's novel became a great movie, and by now 14 million copies of the book have been sold...

I grew up in South Georgia about a mile from U.S. 19, one of the main routes to Florida. My cousins sold watermelon by the roadside to tourists. Remember the Goat Man very well. He lived to a ripe old age, and died in a nursing home somewhere in rural Georgia, if not mistaken.

May I recommend Florence King's 'Southern Ladies and Gentlemen' to the collected disputers here? I found it a fascinating tour through a variety of southern types. There's even a taxonomy of good ol' boys.

It's always safest to assume you're posting to either a dog or

...I tend to re-read books I know are good - hate to waste good reading time on a bad book! it's easier to find a good new book than a good new movie...

Here's what my deceased father said in his auto-biography about GWTW..."Margaret Mitchell asked Father John LeLand to proofread and correct, and in fact he nearly re-wrote the book for her. He was the imprimateur of the Covington Dioces".
Don't know if this is true, but this is what he remmebered.

Either of you from around Butler, Georgia. I lived there for a year, on 19 about a mile south of town. I have good memories about living there.

I did not live near Butler, but down below Albany, near Camilla. Went through Butler two days ago on a trip to South Georgia from my home in metro Atlanta.
