Cannon leading Jacob

Getting supporters to polls may be key to election Copyright 2006 Deseret Morning News

By Bob Bernick Jr. Deseret Morning News Rep. Chris Cannon holds a good lead over fellow Republican John Jacob in the 3rd Congressional District as Tuesday's primary approaches, a new Deseret Morning News/KSL-TV poll shows. But when pollster Dan Jones & Associates breaks out those most interested in the election and hard-core GOP voters, the race tightens consider- ably. Jones polled 617 registered 3rd District voters from Monday to Thursday. Among all the voters, Cannon leads 46 percent to 33 percent. Still, whether Cannon wins the chance for a sixth term or Jacob knocks him out of office Tuesday will largely depend on which man can get his supporters to the ballot box, said Jones. "Cannon has less than 50 percent of the vote," the poll shows, said Jones. "But at least he does have strong support among the Republicans" in the survey — where Cannon leads 60-35 percent. And the race is in a closed Republican primary, open only in their case to GOP-registered voters.

So Cannon leads 60-35 among voters that really count in the primary.

Talk about a news story trying to hide the real facts.

Also this poll was taken before Jacob said that satan was thwarting his election campaign.

"Jones and Salt Lake County Clerk Sherrie Swensen predict only 10 percent to 15 percent of voters will actually cast ballots, which would be a poor voter turnout.

"Cannon still leads, 49-42 percent, among those who told Jones they have a high interest in the election and "definitely or probably" will vote in the closed Republican primary.

"But when you take the voters who have a "high interest" in the race and drop in the poll's margin of error, statistically speaking, Jacob could pull the race out."

Jacob is going to get smacked around on Tuesday. I don't know why all the anti-immigration people like him so much, Tancredo included. He's really no different from Cannon on the issue.

Plus he's just a nut, and that was obvious even before the "Satan is Keeping Me From Washington" remarks.

Nut or not, the MSM and the Republican pro-amnesty elites will say that a Cannon victory proves that Americans and all "smart" Republicans support amnesty and the rest are kooks and racists. Electoral sucess by Bilbray and Hazleton and Herndon will be dismissed by all the talking heads.

Don't worry, Cannon won't get any mileage out of his victory, assuming he wins.

He'll be under pressure by House Republicans and conservatives in his district.

A Cannon primary victory over Jacob is more like a stay of execution than an actual mandate for "comprehensive" immigration reform.

Given that the polls are before the publicizing of the remark, we should get some clue of the impact of the remark on the voters. The conventional wisdom appears to be that it will have little or no impact. We shall see.

Cannon will be challenged and pushed for his seat 365 days a year, every year, until he's out of office.

Better stock on strawmen to bash, because you're going to need them.

Cannon's rhetoric on the issue has tacked a bit it seems to me. He now chats about illegals having to go home to get in line to come back, which is Jacob's position (albeit Jacob has this fast track thingie he came up with, which sounds like a bit of a waste of fossil fuels to me).

Yeah as you "true conservatives" such as yourself and tancredo/bay buchanan stay silent about RINO's like Chris Shays and vent your anger at 100% ACU conservatives such as Chris Cannon.

With "true conservative" friends like you, who needs enemies.

Incidentally, Dan Jones is known as a liberal hack who couldn't produce an accurate poll on an issue near and dear to his left wing biases if his life depended on it. Dan Jones is a HUGE supporter of the illegal alien invasion. He's almost as zealous as you are about it.

Democrat Dan Jones strongly supports Cannon over Jacob. Small surprise his poll reflects his biases.

IOW, you think Dan Jones is part of the satanic cabal thwarting your hero, John Jacob.

The same folks were against Bilbray before he won. Now they embrace him.

LOL!

It's not that we like Jacobs. You're right, he's unsuited for office. It's that we despise Cannon. Taking down one of the most influential opponents of sane immigration policy in Congress would be a huge victory for our cause.

Jacobs, it is true, is a bit nutty. But if elected, he'll be a nobody: a freshman congressman from a backwater district with virtually no influence. He's not going to be in much of a position to do much damage. Electing such a loser to a 2 year term is a small price to pay for taking down a big fish like Cannon.

I like it: waste of fossil fuels. Mind if I use that line?

Isn't Tuesday "Get 'R Done" day for this race. That means that some faction is going to have to lick their wounds, tuck their tails and get over it or do their normal and take their ball and go home for this cycle.

The story not told here, is that undeclared voters may also go the polls, become declared Repubs and cast a vote.

Since there have been no highly contested democratic primaries in recent memory, I doubt that there are very many declared Dems in the State. Mostly voters are declared Republicans and undeclareds...In this highly contested race, polls show nothing, nothing about a possible influx of undeclareds to the polls and what their impact may be.

Too early for them to take their ball and go home... There's too much potential of damage to do! They'll fail, as usual, of course.
