There is almost an epidemic of incidents in which American military forces are accused of atrocities in Iraq, and virtually tried and convicted in the media before the evidence is heard, based on shaadowy and inconsistent sources. Even worse, some politicians jump on the bandwagon, and contribute to the media firestorm. But when military brass seem to play a role in fanning the flames investigation is warranted

"Murtha has prejudged the charged men in the press, but what role is the military brass playing in this?"
Putting the accused in shackles as though they would run amuck and kill Californians around San Diego.
Ledeen letter to Commandant Hagee. http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=OWFjODg5YTE4NzVjNjMxMmEzZWUyNDE0ZTQwZjg0Zjc=
This stuff going on in the background about what the military brass is and is not doing in these alleged incidents has been troubling from the outset. It appears more than likely that the "witnesses" are making this stuff up, but there seems to be a willingness on the part of at least some in our military to go along with it. That is extremely disturbing.
So Hagee is apparently on his way out. That seems to be a good thing. If he retires and two weeks later comes out with complaints about Rummy, that will be quite telling.
And in the Hadji case the Marines have shown way too much deference to the thugs at C.A.I.R.
Exactly. These are MARINES, fgs. If any group can repel the political correctness infestation, it's the Marines.
Perhaps the idea is to destroy Murtha et. al. Give em' enough rope, as it were.
I think perhaps the idea is not to make waves, and as long as they only have to deal with the media lefties and C.A.I.R., the way to do that is easy to see. If there is pushback from the rest of us, perhaps the only way to deal with this is fairly.
Why have the Marines taken this unprecedented step? Is it because they hope to get one of the guys to break? I cannot think of another reason.
"Why have the Marines taken this unprecedented step?"
The treatment?
Politics
But I fully expect these Marines and Corpsman to be exonerated.

Hannity & Colmes: Caught part of the interview with the father of one of the Marines just now. It's worth recording when it repeats at 2 am eastern on Foxnews. Takes place in the first 10 minutes. Their confinement has been changed from "maximum" to "medium-in", according to Foxnews.
Yes, they are still confined but they no longer will be shackled when they are out of their quarters. It's a start.
yep, I caught the interview.
I called the brig yesterday and also spoke to one of the attorneys representing one of the Marines.
Good to see that their classification has been changed.
The attorney and I both think that politics is involved in this investigation & confinement but I feel very confident that these Marines and Corpsman will also be exonerated.

But I'll second Mr. Ledeens letter most heartily.

The dad was great, and he did not mince words. If you miss the repeat, I think H&C posts transcripts of their show at the foxnews website.
The story of the "atrocity" is nonsensical
Thank you for posting the link.
Bumping your excellent letter to the Commandant, Mr. Ledeen!
I hope he takes it to heart.
