June 15, 2006 (CHICAGO) - A small fire at a Chicago Public Library on the city's North Side has burned about 100 books -- 90 of them in the gay and lesbian section.
Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the fire is being investigated as an arson -- but not as a hate crime.
Gay rights activist Rick Garcia questioned that decision, noting the unique location of the fire.
About 10 books in the branch's African-American history collection were also burned.
No one was injured in the fire.
The library branch where the fire occurred is near the center of the city's gay neighborhood.

What if the fire turns out to have been caused by a homeless family

Argus: What if the fire turns out to have been caused by a homeless family camping in the stacks and trying to heat their soup? Whose victim status is the trump?
Or supposing it turns out to be a disabled man-hating transgender lesbian NOW member?

How could it be a hate crime? You hate books and it hurts their feelings?

Arson is a serious crime. Books should not be burned for political reasons. Library shelves should not be set aflame for any reason.
Would you please inform us all of the results of the arson investigation, whenever that may occur and if such information is ever publicized?
Thank you.

If this is a continuing trend, where will it end? It ends when all the right-wing hate freaks are swinging from la lanterne!
I must remind everyone that "hate" is a code word in the GLBT lexicon. When they use it, they don't mean "hate", although they do mean to trigger the usual response to the word in their hearers. This is a well-known propaganda technique. By "hate", they mean any sort of opposition to their agenda. In effect, any contrary opinion.
Since the thing that "hate crime" laws target isn't actually hate, but a certain class of political opinion, there's no real reason to stop them from being extended in just the way you suggest. Though they didn't do it in this case, the fact that the subject even comes up shows that people are thinking about it.

Restoration is not enough, he writes. "It must be expanded" to show anyone who delights in this crime that "any attack on gay people will be met by an even stronger response." Delusion plain and simple....
