June 15, 2006 (CHICAGO) - A small fire at a Chicago Public Library on the city's North Side has burned about 100 books -- 90 of them in the gay and lesbian section.
Chicago Police spokeswoman Monique Bond said the fire is being investigated as an arson -- but not as a hate crime.
Gay rights activist Rick Garcia questioned that decision, noting the unique location of the fire.
About 10 books in the branch's African-American history collection were also burned.
No one was injured in the fire.
The library branch where the fire occurred is near the center of the city's gay neighborhood.
"to have his appendix removed"
Ooof...! Just for that, you are under arrest.
O-pun and shut case!
I like my beer cold, my TV loud, and my gay books fa-laming!
That's hardcover porn, that is.
lmao
So now it's possible to commit a hate crime against inanimate objects? Am I understanding this correctly?
Lightning strike?
No. The term "hate crime" is a euphemism. It really means "thoughtcrime."
Damn you, I wanted to be the first to say that. :)
It would be fitting if one of the other 10 books was a book on the history of Usenet...
I guess its ok for consenting adults to publish whatever they want in the privacy of their own public library.
You were at WBAI, too?
I was the station's token conservative.
Not only were they gay books...but they were BLACK too!
I once had a book try to make a move on me. The paper cuts alone were enough to keep me away from books for the rest of my life. : )
Yes, since hate is an emotion, or thought, you would be technically correct.
From a legal standpoint though, is this a progression from the "hate crime" only certain people can be guilty of - against certain protected classes of people to "hate crimes" against certain protected classes of inanimate objects?
Perhaps a gay person is in love with his sex toy, which he "makes love to", which someone damages with intent. Will that become two counts of committing "hate crime", one count against the individual, and one count against the sex toy?
If this is a continuing trend, where will it end?
LOL!!!
ROFLMAO!!!!!!!
Which is more important; a gay book or an African-American book? (technically, they are all "black" now)
Probably a huge Vaseline spill cause by those who frequent the section. That stuff can be flammable.
