In the controversy over Ann Coulter's comments about the group of 9/11 widows, there is one critical question, from the point of view of ensuring standards of accuracy in the media. How does Coulter know it to be true that, "I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much." There is no evidence whatsoever that those women enjoyed their husbands' deaths, and Coulter offers none. The only "evidence" for this preposterous and hurtful claim is that the women became activists and sought the media spotlight and took a political position at odds with that of Coulter. But what does that prove?
I think Coulter probably would have been correct to say that the women appeared to enjoy the media attention. You don't go on these shows unless you enjoy them to some degree. But enjoying a death? And the death of a loved one when fatherless children were left behind? Coulter's comments are not only false but cruel. She has also made other disparaging personal comments about the women.
In journalism, facts and truth are supposed to matter. Opinions are allowed, and Coulter, a columnist for Human Events and many other newspapers, is entitled to her own opinions.
SNIP
If the matter only involved personal opinions about people or things, Coulter's comments wouldn't really be newsworthy or significant. But she is claiming to have inside knowledge of the personal psychology of this group of women who lost their husbands on 9/11. That is why the comments have generated so much outrageexcept from a few conservatives unwilling to criticize her.

Instead of attacking the clearly wrongheaded logic of giving one who is in bereavement a significant voice in public policy on any issue merely because of the bereavement, Coulter questions the Jersey Girls' bereavement credentials - a more direct argument for the libs, it might even cause them to consider the proposition.
Back to the point. I think that the 2nd meaning of "enjoy" is in line with other remarks she has made about the Jersey girls. I never heard her say that they were singing and dancing on their husband's graves, or laughing it up with Jay Leno. Personally, I think Coulter used it as a double-entendre, to get the maximum goose.
"So Bush "works" for liberals because they love to hate him too, eh? And Free Republic as well?"
You're a genius.
Bush doesn't use racial slurs, pick at national wounds and go on the Today Show to sell books.
This is getting dull.
I think shes a media whore, and an embarrassment to thoughtful conservatives. My opinion. Feel free to refute. Don't care.
Yep.
"She screwed up big time, and she will be tarred with this comment all her days........ and she deserves it.
She needs to apologize................. but she never will. She hasn't the class........ yet."
Bull. The rest of us think otherwise. Each to their own. Yeah, she's so tarred that her book is #1 on Amazon. Obviously lot's of others also think otherwise. You lose.
So very right!
So tarred and untouchable that I went out and bought the book today...it was the last copy out, too...
Cliff;
You're a Moonbat.. Ann Coulter attacked obvious democrats spouting obvious democrat PaP.. for political reasons.. And the wives became millionaires because of their husbands deaths..
Worse Cliff you yourself didn't notice all that.. Not that you even read "the Book".. The Book was not about newly wealthy housewives defaming their husbands .. another thing you suspiciously overlooked.. many other far greater issues were discussed.. Conviently overlooked..
Cliff you are NO journalist.. and not worthy too use Ann Coulters name.. Coulter is NOT a Moonbat.. Suggest reading the book.. numbnutz...
Too many public appearances, you know.
The comments made by these women against Dr. Rice, the President, and everyone republican, hit a nerve with ME.
To ignore the sacrifice made by the rescuers and suggest no one did anything to help the people in the buildings is a far more dastardly comment than the 'divorce' charges.
Just my opinion. I respect your opinion, but don't understand it at all.
I see your point, but I think of it in terms of not having "enjoyed their husbands deaths" so much as "enjoying life after their husbands deaths." The second being rich from overcompensation (almost unprecedented in our history) and being fawned over by the MSM at every turn because 'they' were nothing but Democrat shills (wannabes, anyway) in the first place.
Exactly on point...and she also stopped Hillary! right in HER tracks too.
Your defense here of your friend is highly admirable. Many who don't know Ann Coulter take swipes at her, and that's their right. But considering you actually know her, your opinion is significant. The irrational hatred some people have for Ann Coulter is just bizarre, and clearly has more to do with their lives, than hers. Freud called it projection. :) They aren't content to disagree with her, they feel compelled to "slur about sex life, her looks, her clothes, and her diet" as you put it. Nutty stuff.
Exactly. She goes after the sacred cows, pun intended. ;)
AIM's been doing that for decades.
Nah. You're stirring seems to be very popular.
Sinkspur sounds like the typical leftie. One that not only hates Coulter, but Rush, Hannity and everyone in the Bush administration. One thing you gotta love about Coulter is...if she can get the lefties spewing and frothing that much, she can't be all bad!
On FR, Ann Coulter + any criticism = boom.
