Two US doctors have begun an autopsy on the body of top militant Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, killed in a US-led operation in Iraq this week.
Questions have arisen over how Zarqawi died since the Americans revealed he had still been alive following the bombing of a safe house by US planes.
It is unclear if Zarqawi's remains will be released to his family in Jordan.
Iraq has seen more violence with five butchers shot dead in a shop in Mosul and three deaths in a Baghdad bombing.
Sensitive operation
"The autopsy is going on right now as we speak," Maj Gen William Caldwell, a senior spokesman for the US-led coalition, said in Baghdad.
"We are doing the autopsy to see how he actually died. It will be completed by this evening and will be made public maybe as early as Monday."
Two military experts were flown in to perform the procedure he said, adding that they would be sensitive to Muslim traditions about dealing with the body.
"They are very familiar with this kind of thing," he said.
"One of them has the information and knows the customs and traditions of the religion."
Victims' relatives offended
A row has broken out in Jordan after a number of Islamist politicians offered condolences to Zarqawi's family
The move was condemned by relatives of the 60 people killed in the Jordanian capital, Amman, last year in suicide bombings carried out by Zarqawi's group.
His family, some of whom view him as a martyr, have asked for the return of his body to Jordan for burial but it is not clear if the Jordanian government or the US military will permit this.
Zarqawi was still alive when Iraqi police got to the scene of the air strikes but he died shortly afterwards from his wounds, Gen Caldwell said earlier.
US planes dropped two 500lb (230kg) bombs on his safe house near the city of Baquba on Wednesday.
After US troops arrived, Zarqawi tried to move off the stretcher where he had been placed, Gen Caldwell said.
"Everybody re-secured him back onto the stretcher, but he died almost immediately thereafter from the wounds he had received from this air strike," he added.
US military officials had earlier said Zarqawi did not survive the strike, which they said came after tip-offs from his organisation.
Sure. After they are soaked in pig's blood.
Better yet, remove head, attach hog head (sew it on well), and dump the body in front of his family's house from a passing van
He got blowed up! Satisfied?
Concussion effects may have caused massive internal bleeding and organ damage, while leaving the skin intact.
GOOD WEEKEND...WE GOT THE LOW LIFE THUG...
To get concussion only he would have to be pretty far away- the bomb did have a casing, and there was flying masonry. With massive internal bleeding and organ [brain] damage he'd be unconscious on that stretcher. The organ damage was there - he died from it, but the brain was still functional enough for him to react to the people placing him on that stretcher. He would have needed an unusually thick and well-padded skull to ascribe it to the concussion.
"Questions have arisen over how Zarqawi died..."
A 500 pound bomb double tap courtesy of the USAF will do it every time."
I think more questions will arise as to how the heck did he live? Not that I am not elated that he got to see who got him, but, just dang.
GO AIR FORCE! (Football Team and Bomber Guys)
I understand the concept of psychological warfare, but I ain't sure that this would achieve the laudable goal of freaking out and demoraliing the enemy.
I don't think for a second that Zarqawi or Bin Ladin or el-Masri or the other islamofascist leaders believe in this crap about pigs being "unclean" for a second. This kind of psych warfare would have to be directed at the ignorami who Zarqawi et al persuade to sign on as suicide bombers and supporters.
The al-qaeda leadership are experts at jerking around and spinning stories for these common folk who are their dupes. Beating them at their own game would be hard to do, this game is their bread and butter.
The late Zarqawi and the rest of their leadership are basically just run of the mill international communists and socialists that use the peasants' superstition and religion against them. Pretending as if Bin Ladin, for example, is a devout muslim holy man is just a lie.
Psychological warfare can and should be used, but its hard to do effectively.
President Bush's idea of introducing democratic forms of government address this very idea, as they reduce the influence of the islamofascist warlords and give the peasants a vote.
There is your problem. These people are raised with specific beliefs, pigs being one of them. No matter the perversion of their religion, they still hold the precepts of their faith.
Can it work? Possibly, they are still a backward, superstitious people. It was thought at the turn of the century to probably not be effective, but Pershings use and the threat of use did subdue the Moros.

What you got against hogs?
No kidding... that Muslim meat is unclean, y'know. ;-)
I can see a Far Side-like cartoon, with the pigs weighing the options. One of them finally say: "I saw we do it, and trichinosis be damned!"
"I saw we do it, and trichinosis be damned!"
If I'd been drinking when I read that, you'd owe for a new monitor... ;)

Abstract:
Incidents of conventional weapons terror are increasingly part of the reality of the modern world, and in Israel, 19,948 incidents have been reported from September 2000 to December 2003. Most victims are injured in explosions resulting from suicide bombings. Exposure to the blast (primary mechanism of injury) may produce unique injuries affecting gas-containing organs, including perforation of the eardrums (most common injury); pulmonary blast injury, characterized by alveolar capillary disruption and bronchopleural fistulas; and bowel perforation, which is uncommon and may be delayed from 1 to 14 days after the injury. However, most injuries are the result of penetrating trauma (secondary mechanism) resulting from bomb fragments and nails, bolts, and steel pellets embedded in the bomb striking the victim, and blunt trauma (tertiary mechanism) sustained when the victim is propelled against an object by the blast wind. The severity of the injuries is increased when the blast occurs in a confined space. Victims of terror-inflicted injuries have a high Injury Severity Score (30% >16), a high requirement for intensive care unit admission (22.8% in Israel), and have a more prolonged hospital course and higher mortality than victims of any other form of trauma.
