A white woman said she was in shock after a black man threw a 10-inch chunk of concrete at her sport utility vehicle in what police were labeling a hate crime.
Kim McCandless, of West Islip, was driving to the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa on Monday with her two daughters, a niece and a nephew, all between 7 months and 4 years old, when the concrete struck her windshield. No one was injured.
McCandless said she made eye contact with the attacker before he threw the concrete.
"I was in shock," she said. "I didn't understand why. Why me, why my kids, why my car?"
Carl Graves, of Amityville, threw the concrete at the SUV because the driver was white, Nassau County police Detective Lt. Karl Schoepp said. Graves and two friends were in the mall for a couple of hours Monday morning and were upset that the arcade and the movie theater were closed, Schoepp said.
He said Graves, 20, told police "the mall had become too white."
McCandless said she got out of the car, wanting "to scream," and checked on the children, who were crying. She said the men laughed as they walked away.

"To Serve Mankind"
I am old, and anyone who manaces me, has me frightened of bodily harm. So I don't think I have time to waste on their trying to disarm me, in light of their younger, faster reflexes.
Public Enema #1 from the Outer Limits
Impossible - we all know that hate crimes are only committed by whites against (mostly) Muslims.
manaces = menaces
When we circled around the block, we noticed a police cruiser in the parking lot of a restaurant, co-located with the bus stop.
We found the police officers in the restaurant and informed them of what happened. The police talked to the young black boys and arrested one of them on an outstanding warrant. We have no idea what happened to that particular young black boy. Of course, all of them plead ignorance of their crime. The officers were very sympathetic to our case, indicating that every one of those young black boys was a lying thug, but it was a case of "we said, they said," because we had no other witnesses, so the officers couldn't do much more than what they did.
Reporters attempted to interview family members but no one answered the door.
Although eyes were seen shining from darkened windows...
New York is a racist stinking sh*t-hole and has been since the late 60's. I'm glad I'm out of there.
Amen, bro, amen. I can't recall when the phrase "hate crime" came into vogue, but it's flat out stupid. Personally, if somebody sticks a knife in my side, I don't really care if they hate me, love me, or are just doing it cuz' somebody gave 'em a hundred bucks. It's a knife in my side. Somebody throws a rock through the window of my rig while I'm driving, it's pretty irrelevant what was on their mind at the moment.
What has happened is that activists judges and lawyers have turned thoughts into crimes instead of actions.
Maybe the cranial pressure put him in a bad mood.
This was from the main article.
According to the police, this is why he was mad.
(Graves and two friends were in the mall for a couple of hours Monday morning and were upset that the arcade and the movie theater were closed)
Monday morning most people are at work, not getting ticked off at the white folks because the movie theater and arcade are closed.
He is Black...It is immposable for him to be Racist.
I grew up in Massapequa Park, not more than 5 minutes from the Sunrise Mall. I remember going there all the time when I was in junior high and high school because there is oh so much for a teenager to do on LI /sarc. Haven't been back there in years though. The last time I was there I saw that they had a Walmart.
You're absolutely right about LI being completely segregated. The only people you would see in Massapequa/Massapequa Park were Italians, Jews, Irish, and German (in that order). Any black people that lived in Massapequa were located in East Massapequa, which anyone from that area will tell you is not really Massapequa anyway.
.. where I grew up...there was a lot you could do. Somebody mugged my grandfather once, my dad and uncle found out who it was and explained with a pair of crow bars how to walk the straight and narrow and keep both arms and hands to himself.
My abuelito was never was mugged, harassed, or threatened in any manner for the next 20 years.
My cousins and I learned that we were to be polite to our elders and avoid crime. The young man learned to walk with crutches after he got out of a wheelchair.
We have a saying that might be familiar...."what happens on the west side of San Antonio, stays on the west side." lmao..... sometimes you should just let the police eat their donuts. I can pretty much assure you that NOTHING happened to the punk that broke your windshield. NOTHING.
Think about it. This country has child molesters posting bail, rapists and murderers serving 1/3 of their sentences only to murder again.... I'm sure that the little punk that broke your windshield got real punishment./sarc
But if you and your brother had circled around, found out who they were, and kicked the cr@p out of him... he might not have thrown rocks for ...... another week.
I would have had the last laugh on this one, but, I don't live in NooYawk!
That was my thought too. He's armed with a 20 lb chunk of concrete; I'm armed with a 4,500 lb self propelled chunk of steel. Guess who's going to lose?
"The man's eyes and brows look sort of European in origin".
He was also, "Turning his life around." and "Thinking about marrying the mother of one of his children."
Over 40 years ago a drunk grabbed my date and before I could react a cop literally lifted me out of the way with one hand (I was 6'3" 205lbs) and said..."been following this guy..you kids get going this won't be pretty" and started a lesson with his blackjack.
