Over 40 years ago a drunk grabbed my date and before I could react a cop literally lifted me out of the way with one hand (I was 6'3" 205lbs) and said..."been following this guy..you kids get going this won't be pretty" and started a lesson with his blackjack.
This cop wasn't pussyfootin' around!
Fear is a great incentive to develop "good" habits.... an animal learns... I do X and I get my @ssed beat... I do Y and I don't get a beat down....
I think I'll do Y.
That's the problem with probation and multiple chances... bust somebody and make it not worth the crime then they'll either adjust or get taken out of society.
That's another thing. I don't have a problem with over a million men in prison... if you commit crimes like murder, rape, child molestation, kidnapping, that's where you belong and should rot in a stinking hole till you die to prevent you from spreading your filth..... or move to New York or Cali where the libs can coddle you and persecute the law abiding citizens.
