'AL QAEDA' CREW NAILED IN CANADA
NY Post ^ | June 4, 2006 | Chris Michaud

Posted on 06/04/2006 6:45:23 AM PDT by IrishMike

Canadian authorities yesterday declared they had foiled a chilling bomb plot aimed at several targets in their country - busting an al Qaeda-inspired cell with likely connections to a pair of Atlanta-area men indicted on terror charges. The 17 suspects - including five youths 18 or under - were busted Friday night and yesterday morning at locations in and around Toronto, following a delivery of three tons of ammonium nitrate and other explosive components.

The tonnage was three times the amount used in the 1995 bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

New York City police said they were aware of the arrests, but "nothing in the investigation has caused the NYPD to change its counter-terrorism posture in New York," said spokesman Paul Browne.

Evidence of the Canadian cell's bomb-making materials, including a cellphone bomb detonator, was displayed at a news conference in Toronto yesterday.

"The modus operandi is very similar to other attacks that have taken place around the world," said Mike McDonell, assistant commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Targets reportedly included Canada's Parliament buildings in Ottawa and the downtown Toronto offices of its spy agency, Canadian Security Intelligence Service. Media reports said a major tourist site in Toronto was also a target.

Probably the most visible attraction in Toronto is the CN Tower. I wonder if they had plans to try to topple it.

The bags are 25 kg each. In the US they would be 50 pound bags.

For 3 metric tonnes that would be 120 bags which works out to 10 bags for each adult that was arrested. If each of them drove around the Greater Toronto Area and bought one or two bags from each store that they visited, they would not be noticed at all, especially at this time of year.

They could even hit the same stores if they went in at different times or on different days.

Additionally, they had a rural property which they were using for training purposes. Quantities purchased that would draw attention in an urban store might not draw attention if purchased from a rural farm supplier.

I used to say that when they start planning or perpetrating attacks in liberal land the public will become universally oppossed to dealing with them in a PC manner.

If I recall the last domestic attack was aimed at New York City. Do you hear any calls for getting tough on terrorists coming from New York City?

One car bomb in Hollywood on Oscar night and the libs would be screaming for blood.

They'd just blame Bush and send all their money to CAIR.

About two(2) weeks ago I had a phone survey about touring Ontario Canada and Toronto in particular. When I mentioned something about crime and terrorism, the survey taker seemed to imply that was a growing reason for the recent fall in tourism. Toronto used to be considered a very safe city. Just a quick reading of Canadian newspapers and you will see stories of not so nice things happening near and around Toronto. It's still a very nice city but not the utopia it was once believed.

Canadians will never wake up. Even if (heaven forbid) a group of islamofascists suceeds in inflicting a 9/11 on Canada, Canadians will just blame Bush for it. The spin has already begun. A lot of Canadian bloggers are taking the opinion that they are being targeted because they allowed Bush to "bully" them into Afghanistan.

Three tons metric = 6600 lbs vs the 4800 to 5000 used in the OKC bombing. The difference is less that 1/3 more siezed, not 3X.

No they wouldn't. They'd be screaming for us to better understand and deal with the "root causes." The "root causes," of course, being how terrible the USA is and how much the rest of the world hates us because we're "imperialist scum."

Canadians will learn nothing from this.

Canadians DO hate Americans more than you can imagine.

Canada will stick their heads back in the sand just like they always do.

and..."Canadians will never wake up." from this thread.

Reincarnated troll?
