JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — It began quietly, when a statistical anomaly pointed to a mysterious syndrome that attacked the immune systems of gay men in California. No one imagined 25 years ago that AIDS would become the deadliest epidemic in history.

Since June 5, 1981, HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, has killed more than 25 million people, infected 40 million others and left a legacy of unspeakable loss, hardship, fear and despair.

Its spread was hastened by ignorance, prejudice, denial and the freedoms of the sexual revolution. Along the way from oddity to pandemic, AIDS changed they way people live and love.

Well, that is the theory called most plausible by investigators, and is supported by the fact that 'eating bush meat' (including primates like Chimpanzees in which apparently the virus originated, though it doesn't harm them) is a time-honored tradition "in darkest Africa".

And, since it has been basically established that the AIDs virus originated in Chimps, the, shall we say, 'ALTERNATE THEORY' of its 'jump to humans' is too unspeakable to contemplate......

I don't know if I would go that far, but as far as this AIDs epidemic, it pretty clearly IS natural selection at work. Strip away all the agonizing, theorizing, perversion-norming, etc, and that is what you are left with.

Actually there was a male Canadian flight attendant - who died about 1981 or so - who was traced as being "Patient Zero" of the spread of N. American AIDs.

After being diagnosed, he would continue having gay sex in every city he flew into, sometimes leaving a message scrawled on the mirror for his partner to find after waking up, to the effect that "You now have the Gay Cancer".

So actually, it was largely the willful transmition of the disease by one sex-crazed psychopathic homosexual that is largely responsible for the spread of this disease across N. America....

Sorry dude, but you are wrong. Sodomy is an UNNATURAL act in the SCIENTIFIC sense - and BECAUSE it is an UNNATURAL act (ie. the body parts were NOT DESIGNED FOR IT), it creates a stratospherically higher incidence of communicating sexual diseases due to the easier tearing of tissue (and the lack of protective tissue) in the body parts not meant for this activity (even Paul in the Bible refers to it in the passage that states that men who commited perversion with other men got their just rewards 'in their bodies' - or something like that). This is not 'rocket science'. The ancients knew it.

I think you're right. Stalin and Mao probably killed 30 million people, each. Add several million due to Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, Saddam Hussein (Baathist Socialist), and Hitler (National Socialist Party or Nazis). ETC.
Yet we still have politicians and voters who haven't learned anything. They still want collectivism, socialism, communism; i.e., more government control and less individual freedom.

Suggest you read 'And the Band Played On' by Randy Shilts.The book is an extensive work of investigatory journalism, written in the form of an extended timeline, with the events that shaped the AIDS epidemic presented as sequential matter-of-fact summaries. It includes extensive discussion of Gaetan Dugas (who died in 1984), the "Patient Zero" of AIDS. Randy Shilts himself gay died of AIDS in 1994.

The guy was finishing his PHD and was going to be sent by the Church to run some African school.

The priest was very well educated and was from there, so I figure he must know something of what he was talking about.

He does consider AIDS in general just a plague that lowers the human populations.
That continents had them before and we will get others again as he sees it.

I also understand that. If one is engaging in high risk behaviors then of course there is a higher chance of getting an STD.

That wasn't my point.

At any rate the facts are that STD's are passed around far more often by heterosexuals.. anyone who tries to argue otherwise is a moron.

For all these people on here that talk about homosexuality is the worse thing on the planet...

They may have forgotten that homosexuality didn't make the 10 commandments but adultry did.

And adultry occurs far more often than homosexuality.

In fact odds are that at least 2 out of 10 people(and I'll be conservative on that) that will post on this board about the evils of homosexuality have had an adulterous relationship at least once in their lives.

Most are poor and haven't had a blood test for HIV. So these are all estimates.

Hi, thanks, went back and read the article fully.

The African PHD priest who I housed said there were several ways people were getting aids.
One was when male workers would go lie down with hookers who had aids because both would have open wounds on their bodies from bad hygiene and would transfer aids through wounds.
Some young girls get raped by men looking to cure themselves from Aids.

The priest seemed to emphasize to me that their are lots of open wounds on many people in Africa. That all that happened was a wound had to contact aids tainted blood to infect themselves.

So if a guy was clean and had sex with a hooker with aids, it would not be the sex that passed it as often as just open sores rubbing together.

It's rather disgusting.

well, that's what they say they are....

I understand that homosexuality is so taboo that even the word doesn't exist in some African dialects.....

but that's neither here nor there......in America, it has been GAY MEN and DRUG ABUSERS that have spread the disease...and lo and behold, its pretty much stayed in its target group.....

we will get an occassional hetero who doesn't use drugs get the infection...invariably....they have had close intimate contact with either a man who is bisexual and doesn't admit it, or a person who uses needle drugs and doesn't admit it either....

the new medicine do lower the viral load, which theoretically, could lower the chance of you spreading the disease, but help me out here any docs out there....

as far as the population is concerned, the poster was refering to Africa, where we have heard since day one how they will all die off yet their population actually seems quite stable...

The article states that there are many other methods of transmission (in Africa) than sexual ones, but that homo sex is an essential and pervasive component of transmission.

Read the article again (and maybe some of the many links) and you will see that this isn't only about sex (in Africa), but because of many unique social and climatological conditions (in Africa)

hence, the title of the referenced Why is HIV So Prevalent in Africa?
