STAFF REPORTERS

Police from across the GTA, led by the RCMP's anti-terrorism task force, swooped down on as many as 12 locations Friday night to arrest members of what is being described as a homegrown terrorist cell. Police remained tight-lipped about the massive operation, but have scheduled a news conference for 10 a.m. Saturday.

RICK MADONIK/TORONTO STAR
A joint forces operation brings terrorism suspects for processing at the Durham Regional Police station at Kingston and Brock roads in Pickering on Friday evening.

Shortly after the first arrests the suspects were driven to a heavily-guarded Pickering police station.

The station, on Brock Rd. in Pickering, was surrounded by a heavy ring of police security. A long line of unmarked police cars with suspects sat inside the security perimeter. About every 15 minutes or so another car would be admitted to the station's underground parking garage, where suspects entered the station for processing.

Heavily-armed members of the Durham region tactical unit were stationed at one-metre intervals around the station. Dozens of plainclothes officers, and uniformed RCMP, Durham and Toronto police were involved in the processing.

According to the Star's sources, the Canadian spy service CSIS has been monitoring the group since 2004, and an RCMP criminal investigation was launched last year.

Police have not said why they acted Friday night, and would not say how well-organized the group is, or whether it is armed.

“It is very serious,” a source who asked not to be named told Canadian Press. "These people had plans.”

While the intended target is unclear, the plan was to detonate an explosive device in Ontario, the source said.

“That’s the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage.”

For full coverage, including the background of the group and how it came to police attention, see the Saturday Star and come back to thestar.com for updates throughout the day.

I'm guessing it is related to this :

Two Atlanta-area men met with Islamic extremists in Toronto, where they discussed "strategic locations in the United States suitable for a terrorist strike," according to an FBI affidavit made public Friday. Syed Haris Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee -- U.S. citizens from the Atlanta area -- met with at least three other targets of FBI terrorism investigations during a trip to Toronto last month [March 2006], according to the affidavit.
The affidavit said the men discussed attacks against oil refineries and military bases. They also planned to travel to Pakistan for military training at a terrorist camp, which authorities said the 21-year-old Ahmed then attempted to do.
Authorities wouldn't reveal exactly what Ahmed allegedly did, but he was indicted on suspicion of giving material support of terrorism.
Ahmed, arrested March 23, was being held at an undisclosed location. He waived his right to arraignment and pleaded not guilty. ----------- "Atlanta men met with ( Islamic )extremists in Toronto: FBI," by CTV.ca News Staff, CTV News, Fri. Apr. 21 2006 11:28 PM ET

Do you mean to infer that there is more than one border on the US? Next thing you know, someone will claim that thousands of miles of coastline are not walled off and heavily mined. Sauce for the Canadians, sauce for the Mexicans. Canada is already kind of freaked about us projecting power there, but Mexico is laying low.

Terrorism raids sweep Toronto

Globe and Mail Update
POSTED AT 12:14 AM EDT ON 03/06/06

Police across the Greater Toronto Area launched counterterrorism raids early yesterday, arresting at least eight people in a roundup expected to continue overnight and beyond.

“We anticipate more arrests, but not necessarily tonight,” an RCMP source said of the arrests, in what appeared to be the most concerted such sweep in Canada since the terrorist attacks in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service aided the RCMP and officers from Toronto, Peel and Durham in detaining the suspects, described by an undercover officer involved in the operation as “terrorists, the ones who hate the West.”

The ethnicity of the group was not clear. A well- placed police source said they are Muslims, but not Arabs.

Quoting anonymous sources, CBC said the targets of the raid are suspected of connections with al-Qaeda. A Canadian Press report said the arrests stemmed from a plot involving explosives.

While the intended target is unclear, the plan was to detonate an explosive device in Ontario, a source who asked not to be named told Canadian Press. “That's the tool of choice for anybody who wants to cause damage.”

The suspects, whom one report said numbered 10, were being held at a Durham Regional Police station in Pickering, which late last night resembled a fortress under siege.

A spokesman for the Prime Minister's Office declined to comment last night, saying the government does not want to interfere in police operations.

The Integrated National Enforcement Team, comprising the RCMP and other police, CSIS and federal agencies such as the Canada Border Services Agency, will hold a press conference this morning to outline charges and further details.

A source in Pickering said that during the day, heavily armed tactical officers were seen near a local mosque that serves about 1,000 families in the area. But a mosque trustee said he did not know of any police raids in the vicinity. He was at the mosque for 3 p.m. prayers and nothing seemed amiss, he said.

Or this, given that their investigation of the group started in 2004 and this gal was caught in early 2004:

Zaynab Khadr claims she didn’t know that terrorist Osama bin Laden would attend her wedding in Pakistan. Now the 25-year-old says she didn’t know clips of bin Laden’s voice calling for the killing of Americans were on the laptop computer seized by the RCMP at Pearson airport when she returned to Canada last February [2004].--------- "RCMP allege clips of Bin Laden's voice on confiscated laptop," by Judi McLeod, Canada Free Press, June 15, 2005

Could be related to this:

No mention was made at the hearing that the uncle, Ahmed Shehab, shared control of the school [Um-Al Qura Islamic School, Toronto] with Mahmoud Jaballah, a man Canadian authorities had long suspected to be associated with an Egyptian terrorist group. When Jaballah was arrested in Toronto last August for being in Canada with forged immigration papers, documents filed in court by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service stated that he was a member of the extremist group Al Jihad, and had supported and ''will engage in terrorism.'' ------ Source via http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/fr/548211/posts

This might be the mosque in question:

Imam Ahmad Shehab - Sheikh Deedat Center and president of Um-Al Qura Islamic School, Toronto, mentioned earlier in this thread along with his nephew.

I'm thinking about their international phone calls being illegally monitored by the NSA... and maybe even their web of other contacts...

Hopeful sarcasm

Think you're talking about the cop or security guy driving the car & the perps are in the back seat.

Not much up on local msm websites yet but radio stations have a bit more:

Raids may be still on-going, at least a dozen arrests, explosive seized, etc.
Islamofascist tie-in seemingly confirmed.

Big difference.. The Mexican government is a drug cartel running a mule train across the border.. and the Canadian government is merely mini Marxists/Leninists/Maoists.. Both are Gangs, you know, MOB Rule.. But the Mexican border is a vector for smuggling all mannar of things even people.. but Canadians let nothing in or out unless its been TAXED into submission.. including the people..

I am certain that US citizens will rest much easier knowing that the Achmed that comes from Canada paid the proper duty fee, as opposed to the Mohammad that paid the coyote. Perspective is important when dealing with people committed to the ruination of our country. And the neighbors that harbor and enable our enemies.
