Indeed, I suspect that many senators who voted for the legislation don't have a clue as to the potential overall increase in immigration.

Perhaps some, but I'd wager a whole lot of 'em know exactly what they just passed.

Melman's much touted RNC poll claims broad support for comprehensive reform. I would wager my 401K that 90% of the dopes who support "comprehensive" reform don't know jack about this abominable senate bill.

Support for the Senate immigration "deform" has peaked and will decline as the public becomes informed. . . .kinda like Harriet Miers ;)

How many illegal aliens is Teddy Kennedy and John McCain bringing home with them to feed and house? Nothing like a RINO and a Liberal to come up with a plan to destroy our country.

I'm with the president on giving some mexicans a fair shot at citizenship, but consider : you not only get a flood of them, you get their CULTURE : squalor, blood lust of animal cruelty(bull/cock fights), etc. Let them take over and you'd no longer have AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, this wonderful country would look just like mexico, dirty, poor, squalor. It relates to "sandy's" AG breakthrough : give everyone in the world their own "flying carpet" and you'd have the entire third world landing on your lawn. If you think this mexican locust plague is bad, multiply that by 1000...

That's a refreshing opinion piece.

""Whether or not the bias is "liberal," groupthink is a powerful force in journalism. Immigration is considered noble. People who critically examine its value or worry about its social effects are subtly considered small-minded, stupid or bigoted.""

Not speaking for this writer, but many seemed to buy Rove's suggestions to the press that the "problem" would be "House Republican conservatives." Then Bush followed up with his hints about opponents being "uncivil" and hinting at their possible racism. Team Bush herded the "liberal" media to chase with glee the "conservatives" and define themselves as bigoted as opposed to the enlightened writers themselves.

He specifically mentions Sen. Sessions. Good move, there was an attack piece on him in this same paper that was totally uncalled for.

40,000,000 immigrants in the next 20 years.

How many abortions will we have in the next 20 years?

Is it possible that the two numbers will be roughly equal?

If half of the next generation on Americans is killed before birth, maybe we need to import replacements.

Or maybe we need to change the abortion laws, too...

"and define themselves as bigoted as opposed to the enlightened writers themselves."

Arrrggghh!

I meant,

"and define them as bigoted as opposed..."

Well it is down to 40 million now. It started at something like 200 million, when the Senate bill got of committee. Congress is a bit of a circus these days, with reckless behavior the soup de jour.

Amidst all the rhetoric on the Senate Bill (S.2611), is one underlying theme that no Senator dare utter. The supporters of the bill are only interested in one thing, buying votes. They are not interested in securing the border. They are not interested in guest workers, temporary workers or whatever you wish to call them. They are interested in creating new citizens that will vote their way with a decidedly leftist tilt favoring more and bigger government.

Depends on where you look for the numbers:

THE MOST IMPORTANT DEBATE OF THE YEAR

An extraordinary exchange just took place on the Senate floor over the last 40 minutes. It's the most important debate of the year, in my opinion.

The questions are these: Who do we let into this country and how many?  Under the Senate bill.... There would be, in effect, no limits.  If the current legal immigration level (950,000 a year for 20 years or 18.9 million over 20 years) is excluded from the total, according to Sessions, the Senate bill could be described as increasing legal immigration by 59 million to 198.2 million over 20 years.

You've got to watch the exchange for yourselves. We'll have video at Hot Air shortly. (1213pm EDT: Video of first exchange between McCain and Bingaman is up here.) In the meantime, re-read Sen. Sessions' analysis:

Senate Immigration Bill Would Allow 100 Million by 2020 (updated numbers)

How Many Illegal Aliens are in the US?--Here is the most careful estimate of the number of illegal aliens in the country that I have seen. The current estimate is about 29 million and is updated daily.--The Tucson sector Border Patrol union local 2544 on the number of illegal aliens in our nation: "There are currently 15 to 20 million illegal aliens in this country by many estimates, but the real numbers could be much higher and the numbers increase every day because our borders are not secure (no matter what the politicians tell you - don't believe them for a second)". (Visit the local's website).

Reconquista, Here We Come!

The Heritage Foundation and Senator Jeff Sessions try to blow the whistle on the Senate's compromise immigration "reform" bill, via the Washington Times:The Senate immigration reform bill would allow for up to 193 million new legal immigrants -- a number greater than 60 percent of the current U.S. population -- in the next 20 years, according to a study released yesterday.

Sen. Jeff Sessions, Alabama Republican who conducted a separate analysis that reached similar results, said Congress is "blissfully ignorant of the scope and impact" of the bill...

Take a look at the numbers:
