What You Don't Know About the Immigration Bill (Allows 40 Million Immigrants in Next 20 Years)
Washington Post ^ | May 31, 2006 | Robert Samuelson

Posted on 05/30/2006 8:53:57 PM PDT by nj26

The Senate passed legislation last week that Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) hailed as "the most far-reaching immigration reform in our history." You might think that the first question anyone would ask is how much it would actually increase or decrease legal immigration. But no. After the Senate approved the bill by 62 to 36, you could not find the answer in the news columns of The Post or the New York Times. Yet the estimates do exist and are fairly startling. By rough projections, the Senate bill would double the legal immigration that would occur during the next two decades from about 20 million (under present law) to about 40 million.

One job of journalism is to inform the public about what our political leaders are doing. In this case, we failed. The Senate bill's sponsors didn't publicize its full impact on legal immigration, and we didn't fill the void. It's safe to say that few Americans know what the bill would do because no one has told them. Indeed, I suspect that many senators who voted for the legislation don't have a clue as to the potential overall increase in immigration.

Democracy doesn't work well without good information. It is interesting to contrast these immigration projections with a recent survey done by the Pew Research Center. The poll asked whether the present level of legal immigration should be changed. The response: 40 percent favored a decrease, 37 percent would hold it steady and 17 percent wanted an increase. There seems to be scant support for a doubling. If the large immigration projections had been in the news, would the Senate have done what it did? Possibly, though I doubt it.

But if it had, senators would have had to defend what they were doing as sound public policy.

Perhaps some, but I'd wager a whole lot of 'em know exactly what they just passed.

Melman's much touted RNC poll claims broad support for comprehensive reform. I would wager my 401K that 90% of the dopes who support "comprehensive" reform don't know jack about this abominable senate bill.

Support for the Senate immigration "deform" has peaked and will decline as the public becomes informed. . . .kinda like Harriet Miers ;)

How many illegal aliens is Teddy Kennedy and John McCain bringing home with them to feed and house? Nothing like a RINO and a Liberal to come up with a plan to destroy our country.

And Kennedy knew what he was doing in 1965 as well.

I would also support "comprehensive" immigration reform, if "comprehensive" meant building a wall, arresting illegals, and sanctioning employers with fines and jail sentences.

Rhetorical question: If the bill passes the House, will W veto it?

I'm with the president on giving some mexicans a fair shot at citizenship, but consider : you not only get a flood of them, you get their CULTURE : squalor, blood lust of animal cruelty(bull/cock fights), etc. Let them take over and you'd no longer have AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL, this wonderful country would look just like mexico, dirty, poor, squalor. It relates to "sandy's" AG breakthrough : give everyone in the world their own "flying carpet" and you'd have the entire third world landing on your lawn. If you think this mexican locust plague is bad, multiply that by 1000...

Yeah, and if they did a push poll that said
"This bill would make 10 million illegal immigrants citizens within 12 years and would more than double immigration to over 40 million people in 20 years, do you support it?"
... you'd get single digit support levels.

That's a refreshing opinion piece.

""Whether or not the bias is "liberal," groupthink is a powerful force in journalism. Immigration is considered noble. People who critically examine its value or worry about its social effects are subtly considered small-minded, stupid or bigoted.""

Not speaking for this writer, but many seemed to buy Rove's suggestions to the press that the "problem" would be "House Republican conservatives." Then Bush followed up with his hints about opponents being "uncivil" and hinting at their possible racism. Team Bush herded the "liberal" media to chase with glee the "conservatives" and define themselves as bigoted as opposed to the enlightened writers themselves.

He specifically mentions Sen. Sessions. Good move, there was an attack piece on him in this same paper that was totally uncalled for.

Yep...

....and ending the welfare freebies.

....and rescinding the anchor baby laws.

Now that's comprehensive.

It's the issue few have the guts to (publicly) discuss: import the third world (en masse), become the third world. It's a cultural suicide mission.

It is a 614 page bill probably written by immigration lawyers hired by Kennedy and McCain. It it tough reading. If you try reading theImmigration Reform and Control Act of 1986" aka Simpson-Mazzoli, you can understand why it might be difficult for anyone to understand what is in the bill. Frankly, I doubt whether McCain or Kennedy were aware of everything that has been buried in it.

That poll is done by the admin's own polster now working for Arnold with ties to McCain and, I think I read some connection of the company to Vicente? could be mistaken on that last. It's kind of like NARAL putting out a survey that "confirms" Americans support abortion while the babe is breathing on its own but hasn't yet had the doctor cut the umbilical cord.

No credibility. At all. And the House Republicans know it, which is why one of them said they must not be polling their district. LOL

Apparently we're to believe a polster charged with an agenda to craft results that favor amnesty, instead of believing recent elections against amnesty supporters and the massive flood of communications to our representatives they've acknowledged.

With that thinking I suppose Kerry should be President after all. The first exit polls did say he won, why should we believe the actual ballots that say otherwise?

There has never been support for amnesty. The public doesn't worry me here. It's the arrogant reckless politicians supposedly representing us that don't give a damn about protecting this country that need to be watched like hawks. They aren't going to give up, they'll just try to be sneakier about getting it through. We'll have to watch every piece of legislation from now on, as well as keep an eye out for Friday night votes.

Did you hear that John McCain pulled out of a fundraiser for Brian Bilbray, the Republican running to succeed Randy "Duke" Cunningham? Plan B for the RINOs is to install Nancy Pelosi as House leader in November 2006, and have her appoint the House conference committee.

"I doubt whether McCain or Kennedy were aware of everything that has been buried in it."

Certainly not everything, but I strongly suspect they're aware of the major points. ....which includes the massive increase in legal immigration, of course. Kennedy has a long history of supporting such legislation (see post #5).
