WASHINGTON - The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday denied a report that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI in connection with a corruption probe.
ABC News, citing high level Justice Department sources, said information implicating Hastert had been developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government.
But department officials, who asked to not be identified, said the story was not accurate and that Hastert was not under investigation. "The story is wrong. Hastert is not under investigation," one official said.

But but but ABC News said it was true! The media doesn't lie and is never biased!
To: kristinn
That doesn't sound like an official denial, more like a leak. Who knows what the truth is, but of course they'd want the media off of it.

""The damn media needs to be under investigation!""
Maybe they are reporting what some Justice Administration officials actually told them.
A reaction to Hastert's declaiming of the Jefferson matter.
If what Haster and Pelosi agree upon is true, how did a judge sign off on it? Maybe the judge will be mad too if he was misled.

Hello,
Yes they did. Regardless of our reaction to the Speaker's stance on the Jefferson (D, LA) issue, I was quite surprised that many here fell for a story from the Old Media hook, line and sinker, within minutes.
Glad to be here, MOgirl PS: Let's see facts, then we will talk...

His demands for the return of evidence seized in the Jefferson raid prompted my "note" to him.

Hasturd is a liar. Also very stupid. The FBI search was unconstitutional? He should resign.

Folks cannot forget that Hastert bears some of the responsibility for this himself. If he had simply stayed in his normal stupor and defended Jefferson in the same way he defended Tom DeLay, the press would have never run this story. When they found out he was actually alive they just had to print something.

I haven't followed too much of the Jefferson matter, but it seems to me that nobody was up in arms back in 79 (or possibly 80, I can't remember which year) when all of the Congressmen were busted in Abscam.
Even if they were told this by someone at the DOJ, they have an ethical obligation to try to verify the truth of it.
