WASHINGTON - The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday denied a report that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI in connection with a corruption probe.
ABC News, citing high level Justice Department sources, said information implicating Hastert had been developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government.
But department officials, who asked to not be identified, said the story was not accurate and that Hastert was not under investigation. "The story is wrong. Hastert is not under investigation," one official said.

My tinfoil hat theory is that this was an intentional fake leak from Gonzales intended as a shot across the bow of Hastert. Can you guess why?

This one I can understand .. especially with the way Hassert has been acting about JeffersonHastert's reaction to the weekend seizure of boxes and boxes of evidence from Jefferson's office made it sound like he was trying to imply the FBI abused their power, and that Jefferson was railroaded.
It was an oddball reaction.

Take a cue from Mr. Harper. Ignore the bastards.Sounds like the media is ignoring him too. They've called for an all-out boycott on Harper, which started on Monday.

This whole thing...the reaction towards JUSTICE, but little or no reaction to what Jefferson did, boggles the mind. That's what I couldn't figure out on Tuesday. Hastert's soundbyte sounded as if he was trying to protect whatever little credibility Jefferson had to begin with.

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that the presstitutes got it wrong again. I'm not. Don't bother waiting around for a retraction either.

Na, it was Newt who emailed Hastert and Frist demanding they diss the FBI for some lame powers argument.
The right rarely takes advantage of their enemies political gifts.
LOL, if Hastert, Frist, and Newt were dirty, they sure wouldn't call attention to themselves, they would start shredding!
No, they are just politically inept.

I remember Newt mentioned something about e-mailing Hastert when he was on Vannity & Homely last week. He hitched his little red wagon onto the "abuse of power" wagon the left has been riding around on since Bush was elected President.

What makes me mad is he gets instant action from his e-mail blasts, and us mere plebes don't. I've only e-mailed my Congressmen once because the one and only time I did, I got a fricken auto-response.

The rightwing has a case of "battered woman syndrome", its probably understandable considering the 24/7, 365 day political campaign that has been run by the MSM against the right for 40 years.

My take is that Hastert misread what the public perception of his position on the search warrant would be.
He might truly believe that he is fighting the good fight by protecting the House against Executive power, but I bet he has no idea how those outside of the Beltway view it as a reflex reaction to protect his pals and privileges, or how hopping mad it makes some of us (myself included).
The sloppy ABC story doesn't change this for me one iota. Hastert may be a victim of the Drive-by Media, but he is also a victim of his own massive arrogance, and worse, for a Speaker, of political stupidity, IMHO.
He could have condemned corruption, publicly thanked the DoJ for showing restraint and respect for the House, and then pitched his fit in private. Instead he chose to come across as a pompous ass, and I'm starting to think it is because he is one.

I'd love to sign up just so that I can use the eff word with impunity.
Not going to happen.
I do watch ABC News, and have for years, but they are an absolute disgrace to what true journalism is all about.
ABC News is an abomination.

This was pushback coming from the donks to an easy target Hastert (that has been mishandling this Jefferson probe) due to huge and deep investigations that are coming to a close.Yup. Don't forget that the DOJ (source of the leak about Hastert) was denied security clearance to investigate the NSA database story -- there's a whole lot of leaks in the ship of state.
A lot of crossfire going on here, and a lot of people in DC and the MSM have cause to be worried. It's going to be a bumpy ride, and reserving judgement until the smoke clears is key.

It makes as much sense as anything...especially in light of Brian Ross being the reporter who "broke" this..
