House Speaker Not Under Investigation: Justice (Hastert Victim of Drive-by Media)
Reuters ^ | Wednesday, May 24, 2006

Posted on 05/24/2006 5:39:59 PM PDT by kristinn

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday denied a report that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dennis Hastert, is under investigation by the FBI in connection with a corruption probe.

ABC News, citing high level Justice Department sources, said information implicating Hastert had been developed from convicted lobbyists who are now cooperating with the government.

But department officials, who asked to not be identified, said the story was not accurate and that Hastert was not under investigation. "The story is wrong. Hastert is not under investigation," one official said.

Are we positive that there isn't some rule of law that prevents/should have prevented the FBI from going into Jefferson's office? Maybe the raid had to be requested by Congress. Don't they try their own? (not that justice is actually done...)

Heck...not us.

WE never got our minds off of Jefferson...in fact, a lot of the posts over the last few days has been about why is everyone talking about that outrage expressed by the Congresscritters, but nothing is being said about the scoundrel Jefferson...

Personally, I posted on the first thread, that since it was ABC NEWS we better not jump on it..however, re: Hastert's reaction to the FBI getting the records from Jefferson's office???

THAT is unacceptable...just as much as any overreaction here on FR over today's "fake" story, IMHO>

Jefferson's office was contacted by the FBI before they went to a judge, and his office denied the FBI access. And now we know why.

The judicial branch granted the FBI the authority to search the Congressman's office after the FBI presented enough of a case to support the need to search for evidence of a felony.

What would possibly protect a Congressman, who at last count is an American citizen and subject to American law, from being investigated?

Don't they try their own?

Are you asking if Congress has the power to investigate a felony committed by a fellow member?

Congress seems to think so.

I don't know if this thing with Hasset is true or false. But why anyone would take a denile by the justice department as shear proof that it is not true is beyond me. The justice department has every reason to say it is not true even if it is. Especially at this point.

"That doesn't sound like an official denial, more like a leak. Who knows what the truth is, but of course they'd want the media off of it."

From Article""But department officials, who asked to not be identified, said the story was not accurate and that Hastert was not under investigation."

I wonder why it is nobody ever wants to be identified?

The damn media needs to be under investigation!

ABCnews was suffering from that insufferable media disease, "Cant-have-Dems-lookin-bad-itis" following the FBI raid on (Democrat) Rep. Jefferson's freezer/office.

Thus, they decided to take off the heat off the Dems by basically making up slander-ka-ka on (GOP)Rep. Dennis Hastert.

Funny how the media comes up with these bogus 'looky-see the GOP is the real villain here' stories each and every time a Democrat is indicted, arrested, charged, or otherwise shown to be the scum that they are.

Yes, that's what I was asking. Maybe "trying their own" isn't law, maybe it's just precedent and Congress THINKS it's their right to be tried by, and protected by, "their own."

This was just a leftist hit piece by Ross with the yenta Rhonda Schwartz and that minor league propagandist Esposito.

It was the DNC press organ attacking the GOP with a BS story about something that is old news, namely that the fat idiot who for some reason the GOP put in as Speaker of the House took contributions from Abramoff like a lot of other people did .

This was predictable and is a page right out of the Clinton play book, make something up and attack the other side by accusing them of what you are in fact doing yourself.

The fact that the GOP has finally figured out how to counter is most encouraging!!!

That being said, Hastert is still an elitist schmuck.

The very fact that he would open up a fat mouth to criticize the FBI raid on some socialist crooks Capital office is proof that he needs to go.

If term limits are not enacted soon I fear for the Republic.

HASTERT STILL NEEDS TO GO

The source would be ABC's chief liar. The fabrication was also highlighted on Yahoo News, as a Big Story. ABC, CNN, CNBC, CBS, NBS, FOX, AP, NY Times, Aljazeera, Pravda, Washington Post, Isvestia, Chicago Tribune, USA Today, Time, Newsweek, - all of the media - totally unreliable trash. Cancel all subscriptions and kill your TV.

Funny how the media comes up with these bogus 'looky-see the GOP is the real villain here' stories each and every time a Democrat is indicted..

If you recall, the operative phrase on ABCnews slanderous story on Hastert was "in the mix".

In other words, the ABC reporter heard some anonymous official (notice that the story didn't even say the source was current) who claimed Hastert was in the mix.

That proves it, the ABCnews editor obviously said. Let's run with the charge the Speaker is being investigated.

Unfreakin unbelievable how corrupt the shitstained mainstream media has become.

"The ABC News report is absolutely untrue. As confirmed by the Justice Department, 'Speaker Hastert is not under investigation by the Justice Department.'

Yeah, but he is under full investigation by a no longer powerless American citizenry which is disgusted by his lack of performance and arrogance.

He has to go!!!!

Good grief, can't the MSM ever get anything right? I wonder if ABC News will offer a retraction. Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaw...that would be the right thing to do and WHEN has the MSM ever done the right thing?

Then he didn't say anything about Jefferson. You appear to be as accurate as the MSM.

1. Jefferson has NOT responded to a supeona!

2.FBI had cause to conduct a search!

3.FBI conducted said search!

4. Hastert CONDEMNS the FBI, instead of praising them for doing their job!

5. Hastert meets with Pelosi and tells FBI to return documents!

I "thinks" that tis a round about way of support !!
