KILLER BUG AIR SCARE
A WOMAN who arrived in London on a flight from Africa yesterday is reported to have died from the deadly and contagious ebola virus.
Panic has spread among cabin crew and hospital staff after the death of the 38-year-old Briton.
The unnamed woman is understood to work at an embassy in the African kingdom of Lesotho.
Before boarding a Virgin Atlantic flight from Johannesburg to Heathrow she visited a doctor complaining of flu-like symptoms.
She was allowed to fly, but during Flight VS602 to the UK she suffered a violent fit which left her unconscious.
Cabin crew and passengers rushed to her aid but towards the end of the flight she began to vomiting.

When the Airbus A340-600, carrying 267 passengers and crew, touchdown at Heathrow she was rushed to nearby Hillingdon Hospital, West London.
Her symptoms matched those of the viral haemorraghing fever, ebola. The results of a post mortem are awaited.
Virgin Atlantic cabin crew who came into contact with the woman have been told to monitor their health. One said: "We are now terrified what we may have caught."
Deadly ebola is often characterised by the sudden onset of fever, intense weakness, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.

Headlines like this drive me nuts. She has Ebola-like symptoms so they should wait before they spread the panic button.

"This could be bad."
It's bad, but it kills people so quickly there is not an opportunity for them to infect many others. Obviously ALL the people on the plane should be under immediate quarantine. It wouldn't have to be for very long. And they could all be permitted to drink heavily, as the other poster wisely recommends, because that's what I'd be doing.

--Another site (which doesn't want to be referenced) has had posters contact the hospital where the woman was admitted (Hillingdon). The hospitals' press officer said it is true a woman was brought in and died, but the possibility of Ebola has been discounted (I would assume this would include other haemorrhagic fevers as well). The hospital is open for business as usual. Family of the victim and crew are being interviewed by the Health Protection Agency. Good news if it's NOT Ebola...

IIRC they have demonstrated a successful Ebola vaccine in a mouse model. Hopefully it will pan out in primate testing so we can be less terrified by these viruses.

I heard the Russians had that (Marburg) weaponized and loaded in some ICBMS pointed at us during the Cold War.
Anybody know anything further on that?

That is an easy read, but good read. My 13 year old read it it two days. My entire clinic staff of 90 read it and some had trouble sleeping for a day or two.
I am currently reading "The Great Influenza" and it does seem to be dragging.

***How is then, that whole villages die off in Africa from it?***
You answered your own question. It won't become pandemic because it burns itself out way too quickly. Too many people die in to short a peiod of time for it to spread around the globe.

Or better yet, they are working.
On planes & flights going all over the globe. Serving coffee, tea, soda, peanuts...helping you with your luggage in the overhead compartments.

Why should they ban flights? We have millions of Illegals coming across the border all in perfect health!

Clancy used ebola in one of his books, although it was planted by a terrorist. Something else is going on at the same time, although I forget whether it's Denver being nuked, the government being suicide-planed, war with Japan, or what exactly. They're all starting to jumble together in my head.
