School plays it safe with yearbook cover photo

The freedom of religion at Liberty Elementary School has gone too far for some parents at the Colleyville school.

The cover of the Keller ISD school's annual depicts the 2005 Liberty Nickel – complete with the face of Thomas Jefferson – but the words "In God We Trust" are missing.

Instead, the $16 yearbook contains a sticker with the credo and directions on how to apply it to the cover if the owner chooses.

It goes back a lot farther than that. 1862 or thereabouts.
It was first put on paper currency in the 1950's though. For a different angle, Teddy Roosevelt had the motto removed for a brief period in the 00's. Felt that it was blasphemous to have such a motto on money itself, as such money could be used for sinful activities, e.g. prostitution.

There are a majority of people that don't believe in censorship as well. Why aren't they listened too? Why not give the Heathens a sticker to cover up the In God We Trust if they don't like it?

No, narrow minded people who stereotype are evil. Our middle school yearbook, published by the students (yea, M. Jr.!!!), has a picture of a group of students with their heads bowed in prayer. We also start our sports games with the national anthem and a prayer.

See my post #28. Not all public schools are bad. If your's is, perhaps you should fight to change it. Join the PTO, volunteer, or anything other than sit back and do nothing but criticize.

I am a bit confused by this... exactly which religion would be offended by this? Most of the major religions are mono-deity oriented.

The only groups that would be offended would be the athiests and satan worshippers. What percent of the country would that be? 2 percent?

Should we all change to suit their views? If that were the case, I never understood why THEY could not change to support the majority view.

Get focused folks! The fundamental problem here is the institution of government schools.

It is the government school that needs to be abolished not the phase "In God we Trust" on a picture of money in a yearbook.

There is no way for the government school to equally support the religious cultural traditions of all the students in its educational program. IMPOSSIBLE! No matter what the government schools officials decide the government WILL be establishing the religious traditions of some and it WILL undermine and actively suppress the religious traditions of others. In doing so it will use tax payer money to do it.

The education of the young never was, never can be, and never will be politically, culturally, or religious neutral in content or consequences. NEVER!

Education of the young IS indoctrination because children are developmentally incapable of critical thinking. The consequences of that indoctrination is NEVER religiously neutral. NEVER!

The solution is to begin the process of privatizing universal K-12 education.

I'm the yearbook advisor at my school. In fact, I'm about to sit down at my computer right now and edit the yearbook pages. Removing the words "In God We Trust" from the picture of currency is... well, I am at a loss of a reasonable response for such an illogical and inexplicable move. Maybe this is a clever way to radicalize people about the loss of faith from the public school - there is that clever "cut and paste" option.

Here's my response. We just had the baccalaureate at the Catholic church this year, and I have plenty of photos showing cheerful graduates standing in front of large crosses and religious symbols. I think I'll print a few of these.

As I understand it, the First Amendment states that Congress shall make no law respecting the establishment of religion or restricting the free exercise thereof. No need for me to stand in the way of free exercise of faith.

Ackerman suggested that the school could have used a different symbol for liberty, such as the Liberty Bell or the Statue of Liberty, if it was concerned about giving offense. But Gardner said those symbols may not be acceptable to everyone, either."

WTF?. The president of the PTA says that the Liberty Bell or the Statue of Liberty "...may not be acceptable to everyone". Who in their right mind is going to be offended by these symbols of our proud patriotic heritage?. Sadly, I fear that there are many these days who fit the profile, absent the fact that I did specify sanity as a criteria.
