It goes back a lot farther than that. 1862 or thereabouts.
It was first put on paper currency in the 1950's though. For a different angle, Teddy Roosevelt had the motto removed for a brief period in the 00's. Felt that it was blasphemous to have such a motto on money itself, as such money could be used for sinful activities, e.g. prostitution.
