President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.
Jim

You and Bush both should be ashamed for the slime of using the "mass deportation" line that nobody has used.

First, you have to have a real committment to control the border or nothing else matters. Controlling the border is not massive deportation.

Second, simply enforcing, absolutley enforcing existing law, mostly on the employer side, will not produce a one-time massive deportation. It cannot be done quickly, but it can be done gradually and comprehensively, in a way that, over time, more and more employers actually face enforcement penalties and as more employers become penalized, to the max, they will respond by quiting the hiring of illegals.

Gradually, majorities of illegals will, on their own (1)return "home" as employment opportunities here are diminished and (2)send one parent of a two-parent household home, to get back in line for legal entry, sending money back here to help the parent with the "anchor" child(ren) until they can legally come back.

There will be no massive deportation, but a gradual reduction of the number of illegals, over five or so years.

Some will remain, at the margins they have always secured in minor job niches - but no eventual citizenship would ever accrue to them.

But the biggest reason for that strong enforcement is that it clarifies to potential would-be illegal immigrants that you are actually, strongly enforcing the laws. Fewer will come, when they know being illegal will not be the cake-walk of lawlessness it now is.

Failure to enforce what we already have demonstrates there will be no strong intent ever put behind enforcement of the "reforms". They will be meaningless if enforcement is known to be a sham anyway.

Per my post on another thread after visting DUh:

What scares me most about this speech is that the folks over at DUh are having a tough time trying to find anything solid to bash Bush on. They are resorting to older, previous slanders rather than anything derived from this speech. In other words, they seem to like what they hear.

Be afraid...

I see approval ratings below 20 percent shortly after the speech is digested by the base.

Bump all that.
I love it every-time I read it.
Too bad I don't get the chance to read it here much these days.

as deporting millions of illegals is not going to be feasible. Yes it is feasible, just turn off the jobs and social services. I give up, I'm voting third party. See You guys in USSNA (United Socialist States Of North America)

One more:

Proverbs 17:15

Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent—
the LORD detests them both.

Did you really say- "turn off the jobs"? Did you think about the ramifications of "turning off the jobs" for even one second before you made this statement?

How many American business' need to be shut down to make you happy?

How many real Americans lose there jobs in your massive "turn off the jobs" plan?

That's quite you plan you have here.

The 9/11 jihadists were illegals.

Don't be an a$$.

In the context of my statement you're agreeing with me.

If the 9-11 hijackers were Mexicans, how many of them do you think would be here today?

You are exaggerating...twice! I've told you a thousand times, DON'T exaggerate!

You can't possibly attribute to the President, that he is "giving away" the country...etc.

The immigration thumpers need to start being intellectually HONEST and realize the reality of the situation. Let's SEAL THE BORDER and then deal with these illegal immies. Send 'em home, stop them from getting jobs so easily and get them home where possible.

Non sequitur. On steroids.

If that's the case, then you should look up the definition. ;^)

If the 19 hijackers were Hispanic, we'd have tighter enforcement of our borders and thus a lot less Hispanic illegals in this country today.

Or..is that too confusing for you also?

But dear friend, the Senate is going to strip most of the heart of the House bill in the conference committee and force our stalwart House conservatives into trying to fillibuster the "combined" bill that comes out of committee (because the GOP house leadership is more favorable to the Senate version), and don't expect any of the poisonous 400 amendments in the Senate bill to be omitted either.
Yes, I must admit I don't have much confidence with the conference committee being stacked with Senate Judicary members of both parties. Senator Sessions did an analysis of the Senate bill -- beyond scary.

They are setting up those who are willing to stand for something to either fail or be seen as "obstructing" a "wonderful reform". With November looming, guess who the House GOP is going to oppose, in the end; thinking it is out of self-preservation? You.
Time to ask my Congressman, who has a backbone, to tell the other limp-wristed members to get one.

A party leadership turning against a party base is a very ugly thing.Right again. It's tearing a lot of us up and leads to holding one's nose as they pull the voting lever.

The GOP and now BUSH have an immigration policy:

NON ENFORCEMENT OF ANY IMMIGRATION LAW.

what ever bill is passed will only be given token enforcement as the last 20 yrs has shown.

SO many GOP koolaid drinkers here last night and today
the sad part is none is honest enough to admit the
truth..they will go down with the rest of us except of course the very top of the elites in their secured compounds..
