President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

What can you point to that would make voting third party a sane decision?

I know why I voted for Perot...But I can't figure out why you voted for Bush...

A Guest Worker program, is nothing more than re-categorizing 'illegals' as 'legals'. How many people are standing in line, waiting to set foot on US soil right this minute? A hundred? A thousand? A hundred thousand?

These people have played by the rules, they have paid legal fees, they have paid filing fees; and they are waiting in their home country for the paperwork to be completed and sent back to them, so they can pay someone to take them here.

Meanwhile, we have felons who have evaded authorities for years, who have no loyalty or intention of becomeing Americans demanding that we accept them. They demand we teach their children in Spanish, they demand we teach them their history and their culture. The demand we celebrate 'Cinco de Mayo', the wave their flags on our soil and demand we recognize them.

The phrase 'Mi Casa, Su Casa' is said by the host to an invited guest; but never by the uninvited guest to the host. Illegals have not grasped this very basic concept.

Book'em; and ship'em. Make the cost so severe, that their relatives will not even conceive of coming here illegally. I mean, seize their cars, homes, property, bank accounts, and send them home. This is how we treat drug smugglers, car thieves and other felons. This is how Mexico would treat us, and this is simply enforcing the laws we already have on our books.

I still get tears in my eyes when I listen to an old Reagan speech. I think he was very sincere in is love for America, and for old fashioned American principles.

You insult all Native Americans by comparing them to lawbreaking Mexicans.

I bet my ancestors stealing their land, putting them in stockades and force-marching them to Oklahoma was a much greater insult. By degrees I hardly noticed mine.

I would rather not have the Army round up anyone and place them in stockades but I'd make an exception for Muslimes.

Are you THAT dimwitted enough not to realize that Texas, California and the whole southwest were not part of Mexico at the time?

They were under the control of the Spanish. Mexico as a nation did not exist until 1810. NOT in the seventeenth century, but the nineteenth. Also, aside from the indigenous tribes of the area, there were few Mexican nationals, even during the Mexican-American war.

Now cease your name calling and settle down.

We already have "guest worker" programs. We do not need anymore.

It's got to be easier than capturing and deporting 12 million, or 20 million, people.

Forget about capturing or deporting 12 to 20 million. The first thing I want to do is stop the flow of illegals coming in. If you have a water pipe break in the basement, the first thing you do is shut the water off, Then you can figure out how to deal with the water damage.

You should get together with the others who oppose this who say there is no jobs americans can't do. If there's no jobs americans can't do, then certainly we can do the job of policing a guest worker program.

Americans can also build fences and secure the border.

Who is watching Greta? Did her guest just say "look at them as Native Americans who ended up on the wrong side of the border"?

I did not watch the President but read the transcript afterward and found it to be a reasonable speech and a good start. I did not agree with everything but did not see anything I could not live with as I don't think we are prepared to round up all illegal aliens and deport them.

If we were willing to do that, I would prefer to see other people rounded up and deported in the place of some/many of the illegal aliens. I would also prefer to see the wholesale execution of convicted capital felons. There is no need to wait more than a year for murderers.

WTC 1 may have even been on daddy's watch - off to Google.

I'll save you the trip. It was February 26, 1993. The anniversay of the end of Gulf War I. And Bill Clinton was President.

I'm sick of being labelled a RINO, when I'm probably to the right of you on Abortion, Economics and other social policies. I'm just someone who realizes that we're between a rock and a hard place and Bush just made a brilliant political move.
Oh and by the way im not a RINO, I'm a proud republican, who realizes that we may need to sacrifice part of our Agenda inorder to save the country. I would love just as much as anyone to see all illegals turned away, even shot with rubber bullets as the come across, but that simply isnt reasonable, feasible or poltically responsible.

Your choice:

Get every detail you want of the Immigration reform, or sacrifice one peice of it so we can keep the house and senate from Nancy Pelosi.

Just heard tonight that many boomers plan to work into their 70's and some have said into their 80's.

Many could be thousands and there are literally MILLIONS of them. It is going to get very ugly when the Gen-x and Y-rs realize each of them have a boomer to support.

Where in that speach did you hear Bush propose Amnesty for the 20 million illegals? Because it's funny, but my wife and I both watched it and didn't hear him propose amnesty. He made it clear that it wasn't fair for people who broke the law to get ahead of the line for citizenship over the good people who obey our laws and pay taxes and do what they're supposed to in waiting for citizenship. November elections won't be a disaster, unless conservatives quit voting for conservatives. Bush finally sounded like a conservative tonight. All the things he said are opposed by the democrats. And now the democrats will be vocal about opposing them and that will put them at odds with 70& or more of the American people, and 20% of that number are not conservatives, so how do you think the democrats will win in November when many of those who support real border security are not Republicans and many of those will not vote for democrats weak on border security.

Bush clearly said he would not support a bill that gives amnesty, but a worker program which is not amnesty, and also required that they learn English. That's not something democrats support either.

And the SANCTUARY CITIES are the bedrock of the prob lem. This whole illegal thing is REALLY, first and foremost a LOCAL problem, which has been festering for the past 1/2 century. It is NOT President Bush's fault and no, he can't fix it immediately.

However, the person I queried on this, said that he CALLED THE POLICE; he NEVER contacted the INS nor ICE.

They don't give a damn.

They are out of touch arrogant elitists that think we're too "simple" minded about the issue, and can be rounded up with code words like pelosi! kennedy!

whatever.

Since my opinion and the majority of legal citizen's opinions don't matter to Washington, let them appeal to Mexico's voters in the fall. Clearly they prefer the support of lawbreakers rather than tax paying citizens that obey the law.
