President's Immigration speech - Live thread

Edited on 05/15/2006 4:38:26 PM PDT by Jim Robinson. [history]

I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.

Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

Would we be doing this through the courts/INS or just rounding them up and shipping them out?

I'm assuming you mean, "after they've had prior warning and 1 to 2 years to comply", are we going to just round them up and ship them out...

No..
As I pointed out in my previous post, they've had plenty of time to go home and start paperwork for legal immigration..
Anyone remaining will be charged whenever they are encountered, or stopped on unrelated charges, etc..
We ( ICE, Local LEO's, etc..) would not go looking for them, ( except in the case of ICE, 'cause it's their job. ) but would apprehend them when found..

I am guessing, that of the 12 million, probably 9 to 10 million would return home and start legal entry proceedings..
The other 2 to 3 Million that stayed would go to jail, directly to jail, and serve their felony conviction 1st offence term of 1 year, then ID'd, ( prints, DNA, etc..) and sent home with the warning that they are no longer welcome the the USA, and further infraction would result in more jail time.. Lots more..

So, to answer your question, No, we wouldn't round them up and ship them out..
They have as much as 2 years to go home on their own..
They're not stupid... They'll figure it out..

I know you wont vote GOP, and Im fairly certain you havent before. But the average American who voted for Bush isnt nearly as vitriolic as you. The only people who will usher Speaker Pelosi in are the whiners here, who are furious Bush didnt fire up the ovens.

And spare me the "I voted for Bush twice mantra, I wont believe you..

I don't understand this. The president is trying to do something here. I'm not happy with how he has handled this situation but the Democrats are loving every minute of the Republicans turning on their own. I don't consider myself a bushbot, but why all the throwing the baby out with the bath water. Do we seriously want to let the Democrats take over because the president isn't perfect enough. I see Democrats attacking him no matter what he says or does and Republicans doing the same. it's almost as frustrating as the illegal immigration problem itself.

Bush is proposing a guest worker program...NOT citizenship and your proposals are alot more involved than the time it takes to post them.

I liked the speech. However, he could have emphasized border security more (6000 is not enough).

Michelle Malkin is on O'Reilly and she's also saying "enforcement first."

The president said he wants a comprehensive bill - meaning he wants his non-amnesty Amnesty addressed in any bill that comes to his desk.

Respectfully Mr. President, enforcement first. Get all of the pieces of enforcement in place and running smoothly (at least, as smoothly as any government program can be expected to run) and then come back to congress for your non-amnesty Amnesty stuff.

Enforcement first.

" Over the past five years, we have apprehended and sent home more than 6 million people entering America illegally."

That's all well and good. But, 500,000 get through each year-which means on President Bush's watch-3 million illegals have unlawfully entered the country.
God knows how many Clinton welcomed with open arms.
I am a card carrying Bushbot, but, I honestly believe that President Bush has completely blown this issue.
I will not be surprised to see the next round of polls set a record for low numbers.
The White House had a great opportunity to hit a home run and instead, they forfeited.

We already have a National ID plan in place, known as the Real ID Act. It simply would have been enough to deny the people of states that license illegal aliens access to government programs, but they snuck in the National ID standardization under cover of anti-illegals sentiment.

It takes two years to train border patrol agents, unless you want the standards lowered so that illiterate Mexicans can do the job.

"how exactly do you propose deporting over 11 million illegals?"

Just grab em by the collar, Point them south at the border, and kick em in the butt. One at a time. How would you suggest doing it if we were invaded by a foriegn military?

"I said last night that if Bush didn't mention any punishment for employers, this would be just more "boob bait for the bubbas."

Ahhha, seems thats the beauty of comprehensive immigration reform and the new 'guest worker program'. I think of it as amnesty for both the ILLEGALS and their EMPLOYERS. The moment all of the ILLEGALS begin to 'earn' their amnesty and are issued green cards, technically they are no longer ILLEGAL and, voila, their EMPLOYERS are off the hook. Not that they had anything to worry about anyway. I guess this is just D.C.'s way of rewarding them for their illegal behavior too.

The down side to the President's guest worker proposal is that it would put 20 million illegals on the path to citizenship.

Another downside is that guest workers will be more costly to employers than true illegals so illegals will still be in demand.
