[history]
I searched but did not see a thread already open for tonights speech. I think this is the most important speech the President will probably make for the remainder of his term.
Mod Note:
This could turn into a whack-a-troll thread. All immigration trolls that would like to participate should post here. It'll be interesting to see if we mods can whack the trolls faster than they can sign up new accounts.

And, you say I am a pompous ass.
Who gives you the disnonor of being the "cock of the rock"?

"What is the matter with having real fences?... A virtual fence stops no one. It just alerts the BP that people are coming in. The BP agents must then apprehend the people coming in. They must be detained and processed legally. That takes time and money. If they can't get in here in the first place, you don't need detention centers, judges, or exposing BP agents to possible injury in the apprehension process."
Very good points. That's why I have reposted them.
When they replace all the walls and fences (and also all the guards, police and secret service) around the WH and Capital Hill with these "virtual" fences, and they prove how well they work...THEN I'll go for "virtual" border fences.

Amen. If the majority of conservative voters will get a spine at the primaries and stary putting in real conservative candidates and not the same old good-time Charlie RINO incumbants, THAT is how the Republican Congressional majority will match that of the conservative majority in the public. We can only blame the Republicans in Congress so much, considering it's OUR fault the moderate Pubs and RINOs keep getting sent back to Congress by US. So the buck might stop with them, but it starts with us, and we keep passing it on every two years instead of retiring the old ones and putting in some fresh new REAL conservatives.

Did ya miss the point? If you've only ever drawn a paycheck and never had to write one, you have no idea of the true cost of employment.

"He also needs Conservatives in the GOP. Nothing is going to get passed. Tancredo and King just laid down a line in the sand ... no amnesty. Like the Miers debacle ... we Conservatives will win in the end."
No, you will not win in the end.
The House may hold firm, but the Senate will not bend to the enforcement only approach of the House, which means that immigration reform will die in Committee.
Which means that NOTHING will be funded, there will be no anything, and the status quo will continue exactly as it is now.
The conservatives lost everything tonight.

I agree 100%. I am one of those people that voted pretty much straight across the board Republican ever since I turned 18. No more of that....

Therefore, comprehensive immigration reform must include a better system for verifying documents and work eligibility . . . GW Bush 2006
What follows is text of a speech by Elaine Dezenski, Acting Assistant Secretary for Border and Transportation Security Policy and Planning, April 5, 2005. This report was to announce progress on the plans set in place to implement the FTAA, one hemispheric block.

Now, the third phase is getting into the land borders and that's where we think we have some flexibility to utilize some other types of documentation. So, in addition to the passport, what we're proposing is the popular use of four different documents.
The first would be what we call a BCC, or Border Crossing Card, which is issued to Mexican nationals and requires a passport. And it's similar to applying for a visa, but instead of getting a visa you would actually get a Border Crossing Card. It's utilized by Mexican nationals who come into the country on regular basis, to visit family, for work purposes, whatever the case may be. So that's one option at the southern border that we think will be flexible in terms of those document requirements.
The second option is what we call the SENTRI card and the SENTRI card is also used at the southern border. It can apply to U.S. citizens, Mexican citizens or third-party citizens who cross that border on a regular basis. And in order to get a SENTRI card, you do have to present some documentation that verifies your citizenship. And that's really the key: Does the alternative document allow us to verify your identify and where you're from?
The third option would be what we call our NEXUS card, and the NEXUS card is also applicable to U.S. citizens as well as Canadian citizens and then any third-party nationals who might also be interested. But it applies to crossing on the northern border. Similar to SENTRI, there are requirements that would verify your identification and your country of origin.
The fourth option is what we call our FAST Card, Free and Secure Trade, and that applies to commercial truck drivers on both the northern and the southern border. So if you're crossing routinely -- we have, actually, many FAST Cards already in use and that is one document where we think we have the right level of security and could utilize that in lieu of a passport for those commercial drivers. So those are the four options that we're proposing at this point. As we move forward with the implementation of this program, it is possible that additional types of registered traveler programs could be available. We'll look at that on an evolving basis as we continue to work through those issues within the department, but we think there is some flexibility that we can look at for the land border, which is really where we have the most challenges in terms of facilitating a great number of people and doing so in a way that doesn't slow things down too much.
Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative
Its already set up.

Two or Three years? I can't see millions of Mexicans being lined up and deported. Do you know how the media would twist things and make President Bush look like Hitler. Get the criminals out and get rid of the baby bill, then build a wall/fence. I believe our technology will be a big help on the border.

self deportation is a pipe dream. ....They will stay and find other ways of supporting themselves (crime, the dole, etc.) For self-deportation to happen in significant numbers there has to be a simultaneous three-prong course of action: 1) eliminate the dole (free medical, education, etc.), 2) heavily fine illegal-hiring employers, and 3) repeal the anchor baby laws. Anything short of that would be ineffective.

self deportation is a pipe dream. If self-deportation works then it works - if not, then the illegals will either be eventually caught or they will be assimilated.
If the border is secured and the influx stopped then the illegals already here will become much less of a problem.
