Women who juggle career and family tend to be thinner and healthier as they approach midlife than long-term stay-at-home moms, a new study suggests.
Researchers tracked the health of a group of British women from their mid-20s to their mid-50s and found that full-time homemakers were the most likely to be obese in their sixth decade.
Women in long-term relationships who had raised kids while they held jobs outside the home were least likely to be overweight, and they also reported being in better overall health.

My gosh...so defensive, and paranoid. This article is just stating a fact. It's not advocating anything.
Simple. The women who live that way don't have the time to pay attention to basic health concerns - like eating! Feminazis indeed!
Right on! Apparently, you've read some history. :)
Nice catch, Linda.
There seems to be a tremendous amount of one-size-fits-all in the comments on this thread.
Working (outside of the home) moms hate their children, only love themselves.
Stay at home moms love their children and are entirely selfless.
It does on FR.
Moms who choose to work are suspect. My least favorite characteristic of this forum.
I find this very difficult to believe. Since when dos sitting behind a desk trying to juggle family and work make one thinner and healthier?
This is a comparison of married women at home and single women who are shacking up who work.
The trick phrase is long term relaitonship. There are few long term relationships outside of marriage which will support a woman at home. Many non marital relationships will support a working woman.
(1) "stay at home" moms on the dole, and
(2) "stay at home" moms who are in a stable marriage and whose husbands are the breadwinners (not the nanny state).
Group 2, I believe, are far less likely to be obese than group 1.
But lump them together, and you get a misleading statistic that suits the purposes of the elitist left.
Working Moms Healthier, Thinner Than Stay at HomesNot the ones who work for the government(s).
No, it's passing on a claim made by the author of a study. Don't confuse such claims with facts.
The whole article is silly...
Rationally, one would have to wonder how significant the correllation really is. I am sure they didnt have a large sample size, so, in essence the conclusions are knee jerk.
Rational observation leads me to beleive, that this is all over the map...there are just as many obese women (with kids) at home as their are in the workplace. Thus, as one post already declares, diet and exercise are the true dictates of whether a Mom is obese or not. And, who or "who" isnt more "prone" to being obese simply by employment is pure, silly, conjecture.
"believe"..their=there...man, my spelling is bad...ah, Monday.
The study is just a study. As we know, more studies will tend to support or disconfirm the findings of previous studies.
What is silly about this thread is the attempt by some to suggest that:
Work outside of the home mom = BAD
Stay at home mom = GOOD
as though those are the only 2 factors involved in turning out good, well adjusted kids who grow into good citizens.
"The upper-middle class is more likely to chuck their kids into daycare and go off to be executives and lawyers all day, and they're also the ones who tend to be thin for social reasons. Working class folks tend to be heavier."
That's exactly right.
Yep, all kinds of silliness on this thread.
Moms who choose to work are suspect. My least favorite characteristic of this forum.
I have to agree. I've noticed that quite a bit. My sister works and sends my nephew into daycare. Does that make her a bad mother? According to the "rules of logic" on this thread (and elsewhere on this board), it does, no matter how well she and my brother-in-law are raising him, and no matter how much her working is not by choice (she would love to be able to stay at home full time), but by the fact that they can't afford to not both work. Circumstances are rarely taken into consideration regarding this subject.
"Moms who choose to work are suspect. My least favorite characteristic of this forum."
I have yet to meet a Mom who had to go back to work for financial reasons. Every one I've ever known said they went back because 1) they were bored at home, 2) they didn't want to give up the new cars, vacations, etc., or 3) they didn't want to throw away their career.
It's not a moral question of right vs. wrong. People make their own choices. But I can't believe anyone would seriously think it is better for very small children to be put in daycare all day.
Congratulations, RepoGirl! A great big round of applause from me!
Sorry, but here in MN you're likely to be overweight whether you're married, at home, at work, a championship swimmer or a homeless starving bum.
I wish studies and surveys and polls would stop telling me how my life is.
It's also understood somehow, that out of two parents, the mother should automatically be the one at home. ;)
