BUSH SET FOR IMMIGRATION SPEECH WHITE HOUSE President Bush is getting set for a prime-time speech on Aides note the 8 p-m, Eastern Time, speech will be the president's first from the Oval Office that does not involve Iraq and the war on terrorism. And they say that reflects Bush's He's speaking as the Senate is poised to clear a compromise measure including his idea for a guest worker program. However, a rival House bill is limited to a border crackdown, and meshing the two won't be easy. Stand Up For America ! |

MEXICO GETS VETO POWER? "CONSULTATION" REQ'D
By Michelle Malkin
Does the Senate immigration bill essentially give Mexico veto power over our border fences? Hearing this from several readers and sources. Reader Greg writes:
Senator Cornyn gave Lou Dobbs a statement saying the last-minute Amendment SA 41[8]8 says Mexico must be consulted before any fence is constructed.

I heard this on Sean Hannity's Fox Radio broadcast a short while ago and just now on "Lou Dobbs Tonight" on CNN:
Arlen Specter, according to Congressman John Kyl of Arizona, slipped a provision into the Immigration Bill the Senate passed today requiring the U.S. to consult with Mexico BEFORE building a wall in any area along the border.
I'm checking into it. If anyone has more specific info, please send along. Update: It's Dem Sen. Chris Dodd's amendment included in Specter's manager's package that passed.

Senator Talent on S.2611
Mr. TALENT. Mr. President, I rise to speak against the bill. I want to begin by saying that America has a proud history of immigration. When we say that America is a nation of immigrants, we mean that deep in our national consciousness is the image of America as a haven and a place of opportunity for people from all over the world.

Republicans who voted for the Mexican consultation requirement:
Bennett, Bond, Brownback, Chafee, Coleman, Collins, Craig, Graham, Hagel, Lugar, Feingold, Collins, McCain, Specter, Stevens, Warner, Martinez, Murkowski, Snowe and Voinovich
Dems who voted against:
Lincoln
LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa exercises some preemptive consultation powers:
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa warned Thursday that federal plans to use more troops and barriers to tighten security on the nation's southern border could hurt the city's attempts to increase trade and tourism with Mexico.
"There's no question that putting up a wall, assigning the National Guard, could have a chilling effect on tourism, the relationship between the two countries, economic ties," the mayor told reporters on the eve of his meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox.
"Our economies are much more intertwined than most people really understand," the mayor said. "The benefits to both countries are great."
Villaraigosa's concern with potential economic fallout came on the day the Senate authorized 370 miles of new, triple-layered fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the U.S.-Mexico border as part of a sweeping immigration bill. The vote opens the way for negotiations with the House.

No to Condoleezza Rice.
No to John McCain.
No to Newt Gingrich.
No to Haley Barbour.
None of these Republican politicians will be able to stop Hillary Clinton in 2008 or solve the most pressing problems facing this country.

What is wrong with American conservatism? Hardly anything at all. From tax to immigration to judicial philosophy, conservatives are beginning to set the agenda of public debate. Whole stretches of popular culture are objectively conservative talk radio and the blogosphere, for example.

-Rep. Tom Tancredo
Thanks, Seadog, for trying to help me get this stuff straight in my head. So much going on!!
That's because the 'good citizens' have all fled!!
It's AzatLAn now.
"The FBI has ramped up in O.C., creating three anti-terrorist units, focusing on al-Qaida, non-al-Qaida foreigners and domestic suspects. She talked about planting bugs and closed-circuit TV cameras, and examining computer use and e-mail.
snip
Asked whether citizens should be worried about the activist Muslim students at UCI, Rose said, "That is another tough question to answer" - which I took to mean she has an answer but doesn't want to single out one group. She did say the FBI is aware of large numbers of Muslims at both UCI and USC.
"I think we need to be concerned with everybody, including our next-door neighbor," she said, adding the FBI gets frequent calls from people who want to tell them about situations like a Muslim neighbor who is changing his license plates or the guy who has nothing in his apartment but a mattress and five computers.
They are harming this country with their ridiculous sham bill. It is so blatantly obvious that the border needs to be secured FIRST FRIST. [and that would be by applying every method necessary to do it, not 300 feet or with 2.5 NG troops per mile being poised and paraded around for the media] I only pray that none of them will be hurt while they are out there unarmed!
Stop fiddling away our sovereignty and safety in the senate by foolish bills that are argued over and over and over and nothing is EVER done!! How do they expect to keep their jobs by working on the premise that all Americans are stupid or not paying attention. The Internet has done away with their closed door secrecy and game playing.
Let's do a comparison......The Senate has selected the following 18 to Represent in the conference. 10 Republicans and 8 Democrats. However, best as I can tell, based on y our list of Pro-Amnesties, of the 10 Republicans chosen, only 4 are anti-amnesty. So, in total from the Senate side, thats 14 in favor and ONLY 4 oppose. And of the 4 that oppose, I'm not completely sure that Hatch, Kyle, and Cornyn are REALLY anti-amnesty. Of the 18 chosen, is Sessions the only Senator to represent the Senate in conference who is against amnesty?

I agree JD, the Senate is non-issue for now.
What I would like to know is who from the House voted in favor and against the House Bill and who will be chosen to represent the House at conference.
Does Pence's idea sound like amnesty to you, even though it does require returning home to 'touch base' first?
Also, I know there is another compromise coming from the House that will allow 'amnesty' but no citizenship. Personally, I don't think they want citizenship anyway, so, imo, that's not a compromise.
I agree with this as well. Have we found out when the 'conference' will take place? Has it been determined?
I too hope that majority of majority is called. The Senate Bill does not even deserve acknowledgement of its existence. I think that if it is successfully put down, there will be nothing done on the border and no current immigration laws will be enforced, it will be status quo.
Oh, kewl! tell him thanks!!! Just checking in for a bit...will be offline again till later tonight.
Well said!
Another sell-out kinda guy.
It certainly has.
